Government Efforts to Ensure Safe Passage for Thai Vessels
The government has been actively collaborating with Iran to ensure the safe passage of Thai vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Panidone Pachimsawat, the deputy spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This collaboration is part of broader efforts to protect Thai nationals and commercial ships caught in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
During a daily update on these efforts, Panidone highlighted that coordination with Iranian authorities is ongoing to guarantee that Thai commercial vessels can navigate the area safely. While some vessels have already managed to pass through the strait, discussions are still necessary to assist others that remain stranded in the region.
Regarding the specific case of the Mayuree Naree, a Thai-flagged bulk carrier, Panidone noted that three crew members are still onboard after the ship was attacked on March 11. All 20 crew members initially escaped unharmed, but the vessel later drifted into Iranian waters. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, has sent a letter to his Iranian counterpart urging swift assistance for the trapped crew members.
Updates on the situation will be provided as soon as new information becomes available. In addition to this, Panidone mentioned that Mr. Sihasak has also engaged in talks with Qatar’s foreign minister, expressing gratitude for Doha’s support in assisting Thai nationals and arranging their safe return.
However, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation. Panidone urged Thai nationals in high-risk areas to leave as soon as possible and to closely monitor official advisories for updates.
Addressing Scams and Travel Advisories
The Thai embassy in Tel Aviv has issued warnings about scams involving individuals who impersonate embassy officials and request payments for repatriation services. It is important to note that no such fees are required for these services.
In Israel, where Thai nationals are also affected by the ongoing conflict, Israeli authorities have extended airspace closures until April 16. As a result, all international airlines have suspended their services. For those needing to leave Israel urgently, Panidone advised contacting the Thai embassy to arrange alternative travel assistance.
Ongoing Challenges and International Cooperation
The situation continues to evolve, and the Thai government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. This includes maintaining communication with international partners such as Iran and Qatar, both of whom have played significant roles in supporting Thai nationals during this challenging time.
As the conflict persists, the importance of international cooperation cannot be overstated. The Thai government’s efforts to coordinate with various countries reflect a proactive approach to managing the risks faced by its citizens in the region.
For now, the focus remains on securing the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring that all Thai nationals in high-risk areas are informed and supported. The government continues to work closely with diplomatic partners to provide timely updates and assistance as needed.
