Bauchi Police Command Grapples with Critical Resource Deficiencies

The Bauchi State Police Command is facing significant operational challenges, primarily stemming from acute shortages in personnel, arms, and ammunition. These deficiencies are severely hampering the command’s capacity to effectively combat the escalating criminal activities plaguing the state.

Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, brought these pressing concerns to light during a recent visit by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 12, Vungmoh Kwaimo, to the command headquarters. Commissioner Aliyu explicitly outlined the critical issues impacting the command’s operational effectiveness.

“At this point, it is pertinent to inform the Assistant Inspector-General of Police on a few pressing concerns affecting the command’s operational capabilities,” stated Commissioner Aliyu. He elaborated on the immediate impact of these shortages:

• Manpower Deficit: The most significant hurdle identified is the insufficient number of police personnel. This shortage directly impacts deployment strategies, reducing the command’s ability to respond swiftly and comprehensively to emerging security threats across the vast expanse of Bauchi State. The increasing complexity and volume of criminal activities necessitate a larger and more agile police force.
• Inadequate Arms and Ammunition: Beyond personnel, the command is also experiencing a critical lack of essential weaponry and ammunition. These resources are vital for equipping officers to effectively confront armed criminals and maintain public safety. The current supply is insufficient to support ongoing operations and adequately deter criminal elements.

Commissioner Aliyu emphasized the urgent need for both additional personnel and a substantial reinforcement of the command’s existing workforce. He underscored that these reinforcements, coupled with a replenishment of arms and ammunition, are indispensable for the successful execution of ongoing crime-fighting initiatives.

In his response, AIG Vungmoh Kwaimo acknowledged the commendations for the command’s achievements while also recognizing the gravity of the issues raised by Commissioner Aliyu. He pledged to champion these concerns and escalate them to the relevant national authorities for prompt attention.

“We will examine the challenges highlighted by the commissioner of police, particularly the issues of manpower shortages and other operational constraints, and do our best to address them,” AIG Kwaimo assured.
