President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light to a significant expansion of a key government initiative, broadening its scope to encompass both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EVs). This strategic move aims to reposition Nigeria’s approach to clean and affordable transportation, fostering greater energy security and environmental responsibility.
The initiative, formerly known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), will now operate under the new banner of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV). This rebranding signifies a comprehensive commitment to a dual-pronged strategy for decarbonizing the nation’s transport sector.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the expanded PiCNG & EV will assume a central role in coordinating Nigeria’s overarching clean mobility strategy. This includes not only the continued promotion and deployment of gas-driven vehicles but also the strategic development and integration of electric vehicle technology across the country.
The initiative will continue to spearhead the vital work of deploying CNG infrastructure. This encompasses a range of critical components, including:
Furthermore, PiCNG & EV will now be instrumental in anchoring the development and rollout of electric vehicles. This will involve:
The government emphasizes that natural gas remains a competitive and strategically vital fuel for transportation in Nigeria. By leveraging the nation’s abundant gas resources, the initiative aims to achieve several key economic and environmental benefits:
The inclusion of electric vehicles into the initiative’s mandate further reinforces the government’s commitment to promoting mobility solutions that are not only affordable and efficient but also environmentally responsible. This dual focus acknowledges the evolving global landscape of sustainable transportation and positions Nigeria to capitalize on emerging technologies.
President Tinubu has issued a clear directive to the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV, emphasizing the urgent need for a coordinated and rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits across the nation. A critical aspect of this directive is ensuring that these conversion kits are made accessible to Nigerians at a cost that does not impose an undue financial burden.
To facilitate this widespread accessibility, PiCNG & EV will collaborate closely with CreditCorp Nigeria, various financial institutions, and other relevant partners. Together, they will focus on designing cost-effective financing structures. These structures are intended to make the conversion of vehicles to CNG a viable and attractive option for a broad segment of the Nigerian public.
In addition to the conversion kit deployment, the President has also mandated the accelerated rollout of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs). These mobile units will play a crucial role in expanding access to CNG, particularly in areas where permanent refueling infrastructure is still under development or yet to be established. This interim solution will ensure that the benefits of CNG can be realized more broadly while the long-term infrastructure scaling continues. The strategic expansion of the Presidential Initiative underscores Nigeria’s proactive approach to navigating the complexities of energy transition and building a more sustainable transportation future.
