Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has issued a compelling appeal to journalists, urging them to embrace a dual role: maintaining their courageous oversight of government while simultaneously collaborating to highlight the state’s abundant economic and investment opportunities. This call to action was delivered during the 2026 Press Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, where Governor Ododo underscored the pivotal position of the chapel’s members as essential stakeholders in the state’s governance and development trajectory.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, expressed his presence at the event as a gesture of solidarity and a testament to the positive impact of media professionalism. He lauded journalists for their unwavering patriotism, sense of responsibility, and consistent dedication to projecting a favorable image of Kogi State to both national and international audiences.
Governor Ododo emphasized the media’s vital function as the “conscience of the people” and a crucial conduit for communication between the government and its citizens. He acknowledged that the media’s diligent work has been instrumental in shaping Kogi’s identity as the “Confluence of Opportunities.”
Governor Ododo articulated a clear vision for the media’s role, stating that his administration does not seek a media landscape that suppresses truth or avoids difficult conversations. Instead, he desires a media that possesses the fortitude to identify governmental shortcomings and demonstrates a genuine commitment to partnering in the development and implementation of effective solutions.
“We do not seek a media that withholds the truth,” Governor Ododo stated. “We want a media that has the courage to point out our shortcomings and the commitment to partner with us in solving them.”
This sentiment highlights a desire for a symbiotic relationship where constructive criticism fuels progress and collaborative efforts lead to tangible improvements for the state.
Beyond critical analysis, the governor implored journalists to dedicate efforts towards showcasing the state’s inherent strengths. This includes prominently featuring its rich natural resources, substantial agricultural capacity, and its strategically advantageous location at the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers. By balancing scrutiny with positive portrayal, the media can contribute significantly to attracting investment and fostering a more nuanced understanding of Kogi State’s potential.
On the critical issue of security, Governor Ododo detailed his administration’s proactive approach. He emphasized that efforts have moved beyond mere reactive measures, with significant investments being channeled into proactive strategies designed to preempt and curtail criminal activities. While acknowledging that persistent challenges exist, he expressed a firm optimism that the state is making consistent and demonstrable progress in enhancing its security landscape.
The governor also addressed infrastructure development, identifying power supply as a paramount concern. He assured residents that deliberate and strategic measures are being actively implemented to enhance regulatory frameworks and strengthen collaborative efforts within the energy sector. The overarching goal is to ensure a more reliable and efficient electricity delivery system for the benefit of all citizens.
Governor Ododo took the opportunity to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing bold economic reforms. He highlighted how these reforms have led to an increase in resources available to state governments, thereby enabling greater investment in vital sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and food production.
He reaffirmed Kogi State’s steadfast support for the continuation of these economic reforms beyond 2027, expressing a strong conviction in their long-term positive impact on the nation’s overall development.
The governor concluded his address by extending congratulations to the Correspondents’ Chapel on the successful conclusion of their Press Week. He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering and maintaining a robust and productive relationship with the media. This collaborative spirit, he believes, is essential in the collective pursuit of a more prosperous future for Kogi State.
