Rabat, Morocco – Morocco’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was underscored by Nasser Bourita, the nation’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. During a joint press briefing with Petr Macinka, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Bourita articulated Morocco’s firm stance: the stability of the West Bank is an indispensable prerequisite for any successful initiative concerning the Gaza Strip.
“Morocco considers that the West Bank and its stability are essential for any stability and for the success of any process related to the Gaza Strip,” Bourita stated, highlighting the interconnectedness of the Palestinian territories. He cautioned against allowing recent events in other regions to overshadow the critical developments unfolding in the Palestinian territories. “What is currently happening in the Gulf region should not make us forget the Palestinian cause and the concerning developments in recent weeks regarding both Gaza and the West Bank,” he added.
The Moroccan minister detailed specific threats to the stability of the West Bank. He pointed to “certain laws and provocative acts” that are actively undermining the region’s security. These include the ongoing confiscation of Palestinian lands, an issue that directly impacts the livelihoods and future of the Palestinian population. Furthermore, Bourita condemned the “odious acts” perpetrated by Israeli settlers, which he described as targeting both Palestinian land and its people. These actions, he emphasized, create an environment of insecurity and instability that has far-reaching consequences.
The situation in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) also remains a significant concern for Morocco. Bourita noted that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is subjected to recurrent attacks and restrictions, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. These developments are a source of deep concern for Morocco, given the Kingdom’s unique role. His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in his capacity as the Sovereign, chairs the Al-Quds Committee, an organization dedicated to safeguarding the status of the holy city.
In this sensitive context, Bourita expressed a fervent hope for a return to calm throughout the region. He believes that such a return to normalcy is vital to enable the effective implementation of the second phase of the U.S. administration’s plan for the Gaza Strip. This plan, he indicated, is intrinsically linked to preserving stability within the West Bank.
Reiterating Morocco’s consistent policy, Bourita emphasized that addressing the Palestinian cause cannot be a fleeting or circumstantial endeavor. The resolution of this protracted conflict, he stressed, necessarily hinges upon a two-state solution. This vision entails the establishment of an independent Palestinian State, defined by the June 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital. This Palestinian State would coexist peacefully and securely alongside the State of Israel.
Bourita further underscored the critical importance of maintaining controlled and stable conditions within the Palestinian Territories. He articulated that the preservation of a functional Palestinian Authority and the overall stability of the West Bank are fundamental pillars for the success of any plan or initiative aimed at addressing the situation in Gaza.
The weakening of the Palestinian Authority, coupled with repeated provocations and decisions that deliberately undermine stability in the West Bank, poses a significant risk. Bourita warned that such actions “could jeopardize any action or plan regarding Gaza,” underscoring the delicate balance that must be maintained.
Shifting focus to regional security, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s steadfast position regarding the recent Iranian attacks on the Gulf region. He reiterated Morocco’s solidarity with its Gulf partners and unequivocally rejected these aggressions. This stance, he noted, aligns with the sentiments expressed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and is rooted in the strong and enduring relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the countries of the Gulf.
