Accra, Ghana – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered a thorough investigation into an alleged assault involving a prominent international artist, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, based in Tamale. The directive has been issued to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, which reportedly implicated the Black Maria Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
This development follows a meeting between Mr. Mahama, his family, and the Police Management Board (POMAB) at the National Police Headquarters in Accra. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director-General of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed the IGP’s directive and assured the public of the Police Service’s commitment to a fair and transparent process.
“The IGP has also referred the matter to the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Unit to help expedite the investigation,” DCOP Ansah-Akrofi stated. She further emphasized that the Police would cooperate fully with Mr. Mahama and that any officer found to be culpable would face disciplinary action in accordance with the law.
Mr. Mahama, an acclaimed artist, had formally reported the alleged assault to the Police, seeking justice for the incident which reportedly occurred approximately a week prior to his visit to Accra. He expressed his confidence in the Ghanaian justice system, noting the swift response and keen interest shown by the IGP in his case.
The artist attended the invitation at the National Police Headquarters accompanied by several family members. When questioned about potential compensation, Mr. Mahama indicated that his primary focus was not financial redress. Instead, his priority lies in achieving justice, which he believes will bolster public trust in the institution and reinforce Ghana’s standing as a secure nation.
However, Mr. Mahama did not rule out legal recourse, stating that he would pursue further action in court if the investigation findings establish clear liability.
Regarding his physical condition, Mr. Mahama revealed that he sustained injuries to his sides and suffered broken teeth during the alleged assault. He intends to utilize his time in Accra to seek comprehensive medical attention. He explained that the lack of advanced diagnostic facilities, such as MRI scanners, in Tamale necessitates his treatment in the capital. This will include further diagnosis and necessary dental reconstruction.
Mr. Mahama conveyed his hope that such an incident would not be repeated. He clarified that he holds no general animosity towards the Ghana Police Service, acknowledging their past support on various occasions. Nevertheless, he reiterated his firm stance that justice must prevail in this specific instance.
He also commended the Police for extending an invitation to him in Accra, interpreting it as a positive indication of their commitment to resolving the matter seriously.
Providing context to the incident, Mr. Mahama explained that the altercation originated from a dispute involving his uncle and police personnel. He was present in the same vehicle at the time.
The Ghana Police Service has pledged to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry into the allegations. The outcome of the investigation by the CID and PIPS units is anticipated to shed light on the facts of the case and ensure accountability. The artist’s commitment to seeking justice, rather than immediate compensation, highlights his broader concern for the integrity of the justice system and national image.
The Police Public Affairs Directorate reiterated their commitment to transparency throughout the investigative process. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses, providing clarity on the actions taken by the Black Maria Unit and any individuals involved. The swift action by the IGP underscores the seriousness with which the Police Service is treating this matter, aiming to uphold public confidence and maintain the rule of law.
