Will Warbrick’s journey to Melbourne, undertaken solo amidst the uncertainty of a global pandemic, was fuelled by a singular dream. Now, nearly five years on, that dream has evolved, and Warbrick is set to return home to New Zealand, a decision he wouldn’t trade for anything. The New Zealand Warriors have successfully secured the services of one of the NRL’s most electrifying outside backs, with Warbrick officially confirming his move to the club for the 2026 season.
While the transfer makes perfect sense from a footballing perspective, the narrative woven into Warbrick’s relocation is far richer and more personal.
“I think it’s just the opportunity now to be back home in New Zealand and closer to my family,” Warbrick shared with the media, reflecting on his impending departure from the Melbourne Storm. His initial move to the Victorian capital occurred approximately five years ago, a period still tinged with the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We were at the back end of COVID, so there was a lot unknown,” he recalled.
Despite the inherent challenges of relocating during such a tumultuous time, Warbrick expressed genuine fondness for his tenure in Melbourne. “It’s been a great five or so years. I’ve loved it. I love being here, but for me, my main priority is my family.” This sentiment underscores a profound shift in his personal landscape.
Circumstances, as they often do, have a remarkable way of altering perspectives. A new relationship, the accumulation of life experiences, and a deeper understanding of what truly matters have all contributed to Warbrick’s evolving priorities. What once seemed secondary has now ascended to the forefront of his considerations.
“I was more worried about Melbourne Storm and my career. I’ve got a partner now, and she’s from New Zealand as well,” Warbrick revealed, shedding light on the personal connections that now guide his decisions. “As you get older and your scenario changes, you start having different priorities and things in life. That’s what led to my decision, really, in the end.”
There’s an undeniable sincerity in Warbrick’s words, a complete absence of bitterness or any suggestion of an escape. Instead, his decision is framed by a man purposefully moving towards the people who hold the greatest significance in his life.
The pull of home is a powerful force, and for Warbrick, it’s now an irresistible one. The prospect of rejoining family and building a life closer to his roots in New Zealand represents the culmination of a personal journey that began with a professional ambition.
The move to the New Zealand Warriors is more than just a career change; it’s a homecoming. It’s a testament to the fact that while ambition drives us, it’s often the connections we forge that ultimately define our path and bring us the deepest satisfaction. Warbrick’s decision to prioritise family and his homeland speaks volumes about his character and his unwavering commitment to what truly matters.
