Rivers: Navy Apprehends 8 Suspected Oil Thieves

Nigerian Navy Apprehends Suspected Oil Thieves, Seizes Substantial Illicit Fuel Cargo

Rivers State, Nigeria – In a significant crackdown on illegal maritime activities, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder has successfully apprehended eight individuals suspected of oil theft. The operation also resulted in the seizure of approximately 44,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, in the oil-rich Rivers State. The suspects and the confiscated fuel have been transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for comprehensive investigation and potential prosecution.

The successful operation was reportedly initiated following “critical and credible intelligence” concerning ongoing illegal bunkering operations. These clandestine activities were believed to be concentrated in the Degema and Obologo regions of Rivers State, notorious hotspots for such illicit trade.

The Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Mutalib Ibikunle Raji, outlined the details of the operation, which culminated during a high-risk patrol conducted on Sunday, March 22. While Commodore Raji was represented by the Acting Base Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander Justin Jerome, during the handover, his directives underpinned the successful mission.

Lieutenant Commander Jerome recounted the events of the early morning patrol: “While on patrol at about 0115 hours on March 22, the team accosted a boat being escorted by armed elements suspected to be affiliated with illegal groups. On sighting the naval patrol team, the criminal elements fled the scene.”

This pursuit and subsequent search proved fruitful, leading to the discovery of the substantial fuel haul. The illegally refined AGO was found contained within 423 sacks. Lieutenant Commander Jerome elaborated on the quantity, stating, “Each sack contains 106 litres, bringing the total to approximately 44,000 litres.”

This significant bust is part of a broader, coordinated effort by the Nigerian Navy to combat the pervasive issue of crude oil theft and protect the nation’s vital maritime resources. The operation was conducted under the umbrella of “Operation Delta Sentinel,” a strategic initiative aligned with the directives of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas. The overarching goal of this operation is to eradicate illegal bunkering and safeguard Nigeria’s maritime environment, which is crucial for both economic stability and national security.

Upon receiving the apprehended suspects and the seized exhibits, the EFCC expressed its commitment to a thorough investigation. Superintendent Chioma Blessing Emereole, representing the Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, assured that the commission would pursue the matter diligently. “This will be investigated discreetly. If found culpable, the suspects will be prosecuted,” she affirmed, underscoring the zero-tolerance approach to economic sabotage.

One of the apprehended individuals, who identified himself as Sokari and claimed to be the leader of the group, offered a defence suggesting a lack of awareness regarding the illegality of their actions. “We were just loaders. I didn’t know it was illegal bunkering until we got there,” he stated, a claim that will undoubtedly be scrutinized during the EFCC’s investigation.

The Nigerian Navy’s proactive stance and the successful collaboration with intelligence agencies continue to be instrumental in disrupting the operations of oil thieves and smugglers who pose a significant threat to the nation’s economy and environmental integrity. This latest seizure serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in securing Nigeria’s vast coastline and the persistent efforts required to combat illicit maritime trade. The ramifications of such activities extend beyond financial losses, impacting environmental sustainability and the safety of maritime operations. The EFCC’s thorough investigation and potential prosecution will be keenly watched as a measure of the nation’s resolve against these criminal enterprises.
