According to an insider speaking to Woman’s Day, Meghan learned about her father’s new girlfriend through media reports, a familiar way she often discovers significant personal updates in her father’s life. The source revealed Meghan’s reaction: “Meghan found out from the papers, as usual. She’s shocked and thinks it’s sad because it seems from the age gap and the state of him that he’s at risk of being used.”

He met Rio, a Filipina nurse, while he was undergoing recovery in a rehabilitation facility in the Philippines. Thomas had relocated to the Philippines following a series of severe health challenges. These included a stroke and a life-threatening blood clot that ultimately necessitated the partial amputation of his leg. It was during his rehabilitation that Rio was assigned to care for him. At the time of their meeting, it’s reported that Rio was unaware of Thomas’s connection to the royal family and his daughter, Meghan.

Thomas described how his bond with Rio developed organically, stemming from conversations and shared time. He also credited her with playing a crucial role in helping him regain his confidence in speaking, a significant challenge following his stroke.

Despite the potential for controversy, particularly concerning the age difference and the circumstances of their meeting, those close to Thomas paint a more optimistic picture of the relationship. Another source, speaking to Woman’s Day, suggested a more positive dynamic: “Thomas is in love and he feels like someone’s finally got his back.”

The friend added, “Rio’s been a wonderful influence on him – he’s losing weight and the colour’s coming back to him. So it’s hard to argue that she might have ulterior motives when he’s so happy. He doesn’t expect to hear from Meghan but for the first time he’s starting to not care.”
