Accra, Ghana – In a decisive move to curb rampant criminal activities, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has successfully apprehended 19 suspects during a targeted operation in Kumasi. The swoop, conducted recently, aimed to dismantle criminal networks and bring an end to a range of illicit behaviors plaguing the city’s suburbs.
The operation, which took place in areas identified as Alaba and Thinker, was a comprehensive effort to address serious crimes including robbery, theft, rape, violent assaults on commuters and road users, drug peddling and abuse, and the illicit possession and sale of firearms and ammunition.
Key Objectives and Execution of the Operation
The Special Operations Team, under the leadership of DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil and ASP Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo, commenced their exercise with extensive inner-city patrols. These patrols covered various townships and streets, notably including areas in the vicinity of the revered Manhyia Palace. This initial phase was crucial for establishing a presence and gathering real-time intelligence on the ground.
Acting upon credible information, the team then strategically moved towards Alaba and Thinker. These locations had been flagged as significant hubs for drug peddling and substance abuse within the Ashanti Region. Upon reaching these identified hotspots, officers initiated systematic searches of both pedestrians and shop operators. The primary goal was to locate and seize illicit drugs and other contraband items that fuel criminal enterprises.
Seized Exhibits and Suspect Apprehensions
During the course of the operation, significant quantities of dried leaves, strongly suspected to be narcotic drugs, were recovered. The Police Brief released following the operation detailed the nature of the seized exhibits.
A notable apprehension was Madam Ola Ruth, a shop operator. Her premises were searched, leading to the discovery and retrieval of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. As the operation continued, law enforcement officers encountered a group of individuals actively engaged in the peddling and use of illicit substances within the same operational area. All 19 suspects apprehended have been transported to the Suntreso Police District Headquarters. They are currently in detention and awaiting further investigation, with the strong likelihood of prosecution.
Forensic Analysis and Future Commitments
The seized exhibits have been meticulously handed over to the appropriate investigative units. These units will conduct thorough forensic analysis to confirm their nature and serve as crucial evidence in any subsequent legal proceedings.
The police statement emphasized the professional and disciplined manner in which the operation was conducted. Officers strictly adhered to established policing standards and protocols, ensuring accountability and respect for due process.
The IGP Special Operations Team has reiterated its unwavering commitment to its core mandate: combating crime and dismantling criminal networks throughout the Ashanti Region. The team plans to intensify its efforts through:
These strategies are designed to sustain and build upon the successes achieved through operations like the recent Kumasi swoop. The team assured the public of its dedication to upholding law and order, enhancing public safety, and restoring and reinforcing public confidence in the nation’s security services.
