Epic Games, the powerhouse behind the immensely popular video game Fortnite and the sophisticated Unreal Engine, has found itself at the center of a significant public relations storm. The company recently announced the difficult decision to eliminate approximately 1,000 jobs, a move accompanied by substantial spending reductions across contractors, marketing, and open positions, amounting to over $500 million. However, it was the subsequent public statement from CEO Tim Sweeney that ignited a furious backlash from employees, former employees, and the wider gaming community.
Sweeney’s remarks, intended to contextualize the layoffs, were widely perceived as insensitive and out of touch. He suggested that the newly unemployed staff possessed “once-in-a-lifetime” resumes that would ensure they were quickly rehired by other companies. This sentiment, posted just hours after the job cuts were confirmed, only served to amplify the anger and frustration already simmering online.
The company attributed these drastic measures to ongoing financial challenges, stating that expenditures continue to outpace revenue. Despite the monumental success of Fortnite, which reportedly generated around $6 billion in revenue in 2025, this figure represented a slowdown compared to the previous year. Factors contributing to this deceleration included a dip in player activity, weaker console sales, and significant financial outlays associated with protracted legal disputes involving tech giants Apple and Google.
While the financial realities of the business are a common driver for corporate restructuring, it was Sweeney’s attempt to frame the layoffs that drew the most severe criticism. He emphasized that Epic Games had never compromised its hiring standards during its growth phase and that the current layoffs were not a performance-based “rightsizing,” a term he seemed to dismiss.
Sweeney’s assertion that “anyone with Epic Games on their resume is in the top few percent of their discipline” was intended to highlight the caliber of the departing employees. However, instead of offering solace or validation, this statement was interpreted by many as deeply patronizing and dismissive of the human impact of the decision.
The online response was swift and overwhelmingly negative. Critics accused Sweeney of damaging the company’s reputation and failing to grasp the gravity of letting go of a significant portion of its workforce. Many pointed out that numerous affected individuals had dedicated many years to Epic Games, some exceeding seven years, and possessed exceptional talent.
Specific instances of layoffs also drew sharp condemnation. The dismissal of Evan Kinney, a principal engineer credited with significant contributions to game security, event shaping, the replay mode, and the development of the upcoming rivalry system for Fortnite, was particularly highlighted. Kinney himself shared his bewilderment on social media, stating, “Guess who got laid off today! I am genuinely so confused and bewildered. Just in the past few days i’ve had multiple directors tell me how much they appreciate everything I do.”
In contrast to Epic Games’ approach, some users drew parallels to the leadership of Satoru Iwata, the former president of Nintendo. Iwata was widely lauded for his decision to take a 50 percent pay cut twice during periods of poor performance for Nintendo’s products (the 3DS and Wii U), choosing to absorb financial losses himself rather than resort to layoffs. This stark contrast in leadership philosophy fueled further criticism of Sweeney’s actions and statements.
This situation at Epic Games unfolds against a backdrop of growing concerns about job security in the technology sector. Fears of an AI-driven wave of layoffs are intensifying across various industries, including finance. Banking giant HSBC recently indicated that it is considering significant workforce reductions, potentially affecting up to 20,000 employees.
Earlier in the year, Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (now X) and CEO of Block, initiated a trend by cutting roughly half of Block’s workforce, citing the need for decisive action as AI reshapes business models. This was followed by Australian tech entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes’ decision to slash over 1,600 jobs at Atlassian as part of an AI-driven restructuring. More recently, reports have emerged suggesting that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, could potentially cut as much as 20 percent of its workforce as it invests billions in artificial intelligence. The Epic Games layoffs and the subsequent public reaction underscore the delicate balance companies must strike between financial prudence, technological advancement, and the human cost of corporate decisions.
