Voss’s Carlton Excuse: A Coach’s Call

Carlton’s Coaching Conundrum: Voss on the Brink After Another Stinging Loss

The whispers are growing louder at Ikon Park. Following a gut-wrenching defeat to Melbourne, where Carlton squandered a significant lead, coach Michael Voss finds himself under immense pressure. The Blues’ inability to close out games is becoming a worrying trend, leading to stark predictions from club legends and a desperate plea for stability.

Brendan Fevola, a former Carlton premiership player, didn’t mince words, revealing he saw the collapse coming. “They mustn’t be fit enough,” Fevola stated on Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev & Nick. “I was sitting with my daughter Lulu, and it was 44 to 1 [points], and I go, ‘We will lose, you watch, we’ll lose.’ I think every Carlton supporter felt the same. When Kozzie Pickett kicked the goal with five minutes to go in the last quarter, I grabbed the kids and I left. I said I’m out of here. I walked outside and there was 50,000 Carlton supporters that had already left.”

Fevola elaborated on the team’s perceived tactical limitations. “They have got one game plan – go out there, have fun, and play. The other team goes, ‘Okay, this is what they’re doing’ and put things in place.” He added a dire warning for the upcoming clash against North Melbourne: “You can’t sack the coach today because we play in four days. If they lose to North Melbourne, I would just quit. At the end of the day, it’s time for Michael … he’s a hard man, he’s not going to throw his cards [in].”

The sentiment was echoed by AFL analyst Jay Clark on First Crack, who suggested this particular loss could be the one that seals Voss’s fate. “This might be the loss that marks the cards for Michael Voss,” he commented. “We saw in the first round, the capitulation to the Swans. They got lucky against Richmond.”

Clark posed a direct question to Blues president Rob Priestley regarding Voss’s job security. Priestley’s response highlighted the need for tangible improvement. “He needs growth, needs to deliver improvement. They’ve got more wheels outside, more polish, more kickers, more flair. They didn’t have that last year. He has the tools and he has a bolstered football department.” The presence of experienced football figures like Adam Simpson, Travis Boak, and Chris Davies in the club’s structure, as noted by Clark, means “there’s no excuse” for a lack of progress. “Michael Voss needs a miracle to keep his job,” Clark concluded.

Jumper Jumble: A Blurry Affair Between Saints and Lions

Spectators at Marvel Stadium on Saturday were treated to a visual challenge as St Kilda and Brisbane’s clash presented a significant guernsey clash. The Brisbane Lions, sporting a special tribute jumper honouring their Fitzroy heritage through a new sponsorship with Fitzroy FC, donned a dark maroon and blue design. This proved remarkably difficult to distinguish from St Kilda’s own predominantly dark kit, which featured black, white, and red elements.

Brisbane veteran Dayne Zorko acknowledged the confusion, stating on 3AW, “I don’t know how they approved that? Early on everyone was coming off saying, ‘We just don’t know who to kick it to?’ Thankfully we had the white shorts on and as the game slowed up and opened up a bit you could identify it but, I tell you what it was difficult.” The white shorts were the saving grace, providing the only clear visual differentiator in a match that was, at times, a blur of similar colours. The AFL’s decision to approve such a clash has raised eyebrows and sparked calls for clearer guidelines to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Xerri’s Blood Wipe: A Suspension Waiting to Happen?

The fiery encounter between North Melbourne and Essendon saw a moment of controversy involving Kangaroos ruckman Tristan Xerri. After copping a bump and drawing blood from his nose, Xerri, in an attempt to highlight the impact of an apparent high contact from Essendon’s Andrew McGrath, wiped his blood onto McGrath’s cheek.

AFL greats James Hird and Jimmy Bartel discussed the incident on the Footy Furnace, with Bartel suggesting Xerri would regret his actions. “If he had his time again, he wouldn’t do it,” Bartel commented. Hird, while acknowledging it wasn’t a “great look,” didn’t deem it a “disgrace to the game,” but predicted a suspension. “It’s probably going to be two or three weeks. He’s just going to have to cop it.”

The discussion turned to precedent, with Bartel recalling a similar incident involving Nathan Buckley and Cameron Ling. However, he noted the key difference: “He wiped it on his jumper, not his face.”

St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt, speaking on Triple M, believes Xerri is facing a significant layoff. “I think he’ll get a month. The AFL would hate the optics,” Riewoldt stated. He detailed the lead-up, explaining that Xerri was called “soft” by McGrath after going to ground. “It looked like he was saying, ‘Oh, I’m soft? I’m soft? Look at this!’, and then wiped his face.” Riewoldt highlighted that Xerri’s repeated attempts to find blood were likely to be detrimental. “He’s gone three or four times to find a bit of blood and that’s the part that is going to stitch him up. We’ll see but it’s referred directly to the tribunal and that’s never a good sign for a player.”

O’Sullivan’s Star Turn: A Tagging Masterclass

Amidst the drama, North Melbourne’s young gun Finn O’Sullivan showcased his growing versatility and maturity on Saturday night. Tasked with the difficult job of tagging Essendon’s star midfielder Zach Merrett, O’Sullivan delivered a performance that suggests he’s developing into a genuine AFL force.

For an impressive 88 minutes, O’Sullivan shadowed Merrett, limiting the six-time best-and-fairest winner to just eight disposals (five contested) and no clearances. In contrast, O’Sullivan himself was highly effective, racking up 22 disposals and contributing two clearances. This disciplined and effective tagging role added another layer to his game, signalling a significant step towards becoming a bona fide AFL star.

Kylie Minogue to Headline 2026 AFL Grand Final Entertainment

Get ready for a dose of Aussie pop royalty at the MCG in 2026. The AFL has announced that global superstar Kylie Minogue will be the headline act for the Grand Final entertainment. The long-rumoured booking finally materialised, promising a spectacular pre-game show for the showpiece event of the Australian sporting calendar.

“The AFL Grand Final at Melbourne’s one and only, forever iconic MCG? Yes please!” Minogue exclaimed. “As a Melburnian, I’m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar.
