Ulsan Bridge: Global Food Street & Cultural Hub

Ulsan Bridge Reimagined: A Culinary Journey Across Continents

Ulsan, South Korea – A historic bridge, once a vital artery for vehicular traffic, has been ingeniously transformed into a vibrant culinary destination, offering residents and tourists a unique gastronomic adventure. The Ulsan Bridge, a landmark that has connected the northern and southern parts of the city since its opening in 1935, has shed its vehicular past and embraced a new identity as the “World Food Street.”

Pani Sara, a chef and magician who married Jung Byung-gu in 2019 and resides in Ulsan with their five-year-old daughter, is a key figure in this transformation. She works as a magician alongside her husband during performances and as a chef at other times. “My goal is to properly showcase the flavors of Thailand, a country of gourmet cuisine, to citizens and tourists,” Sara shared, highlighting her dedication to authentic culinary representation.

The centerpiece of this innovative project is the “World Food Culture Pavilion,” a series of low-rise structures strategically placed along the bridge, spanning the picturesque Taehwa River. This initiative, which involved an investment of 2 billion Korean won, has successfully revitalized the disused bridge, turning it into a pedestrian-friendly promenade. The pavilion houses restaurants representing six distinct nations: Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Italy, Japan, and Mexico.

The architectural design of the pavilion emphasizes the scenic surroundings. Featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the dining spaces offer patrons breathtaking panoramic views of the Taehwa River, enhancing the overall dining experience. The pavilion operates from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is closed on Mondays.

The popularity of this new attraction is evident. Even on a weekday afternoon, the Vietnamese restaurant was bustling, with all six indoor and outdoor tables fully occupied. Chun Tuan, a 47-year-old Vietnamese chef, reported that the establishment attracts over 300 visitors on weekends eager to savor authentic pho. “I will do my best to ensure customers are not disappointed,” he pledged, underscoring the commitment to quality and service.

A Global Gastronomic Tour

Each culinary establishment within the pavilion offers a curated selection of three to four traditional dishes, providing a genuine taste of their respective cultures. Among the standout dishes that have garnered significant attention are:

  • Chicken Nanban: A popular Japanese chicken dish known for its sweet and savory flavors.
  • Galandi: An Uzbek specialty featuring stir-fried beef, offering a hearty and aromatic experience.

These dishes represent just a fraction of the diverse flavors available, inviting patrons to embark on a culinary journey without leaving Ulsan.

Safety and Sustainability: Pillars of the Project

The repurposing of the Ulsan Bridge was undertaken with meticulous attention to structural integrity and environmental considerations. Vehicle traffic was prohibited on the bridge in 1994 due to aging infrastructure. However, following a thorough review of its structural safety, Ulsan City officials determined that while it was no longer suitable for vehicles, it could safely accommodate hundreds of pedestrians.

“After reviewing structural safety, we found that while vehicle traffic is not feasible, it is safe for hundreds of citizens to use the bridge,” a source from Ulsan City stated. “The old bridge has become a new gathering place for citizens.”

Environmental concerns have also been addressed. Wastewater generated by the restaurants is efficiently managed and transported to a sewage treatment plant via specially installed pipelines along the bridge. Lee Seung-tae, head of the Food and Drug Safety Division of Ulsan City, assured that “there is no concern about river pollution,” highlighting the project’s commitment to ecological preservation.

Adapting to the Elements and Future Aspirations

The pavilion’s location on a bridge necessitates a degree of adaptability to weather conditions. Plans are in place to temporarily close operations during periods of heavy rain or strong winds to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors. Recognizing the challenges posed by the approaching summer, Ulsan City is actively considering the installation of additional window blinds and cooling facilities to mitigate the heat.

Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom of Ulsan expressed his vision for the pavilion’s role in the city’s tourism landscape. “Alongside the Taehwa River National Garden, which attracts many tourists, we will ensure the cultural pavilion becomes a major tourist course in Ulsan,” he remarked, emphasizing its potential to become a significant draw for visitors.

This innovative project not only breathes new life into a historic structure but also fosters cultural exchange and economic development, solidifying Ulsan’s reputation as a city that embraces creativity and forward-thinking urban planning. The “World Food Street” on Ulsan Bridge stands as a testament to the power of reimagining public spaces for the benefit of the community and the enrichment of its cultural tapestry.
