TLC’s Chilli Clarifies Stance Amidst Social Media Controversy
Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas, a beloved member of the iconic 90s girl group TLC, has found herself at the centre of online debate after reports surfaced suggesting donations to Republican fundraising groups and an accidental repost of a controversial social media post concerning Michelle Obama. The 55-year-old singer took to Instagram over the weekend to address the allegations, seeking to clear the air with her extensive fanbase.
Thomas issued a clear statement, asserting, “I WANT TO BE CLEAR: I am not MAGA and do not support any of the many policies that are causing great harm to the American people.” She explained that a significant error occurred due to not thoroughly reviewing the details of her transactions.
Misunderstanding Donations
The singer elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the reported donations, stating that she believed she was contributing to causes close to her heart. “I made a mistake too many make: I did not read the fine print,” she admitted. Thomas expressed her intention was to support organisations dedicated to combating human trafficking and aiding veterans, causes she feels deeply about due to her father’s military service and her general affection for children.

She concluded her initial statement by acknowledging the learning experience, adding, “I have learned a valuable lesson and ask for grace as I navigate this.”
Addressing the Michelle Obama Post
In a separate social media update, Thomas directly tackled the issue of the alleged repost concerning former First Lady Michelle Obama. She began a video clip by stating her deep concern over the internet circulation of this matter.
“Let me say this first. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Michelle Obama and I would never say or do anything that is disrespectful to her or to any woman. I would never do that,” Thomas passionately declared.
The music artist explained that she was completely unaware of the repost until she began receiving numerous phone calls and text messages from concerned individuals. Upon checking her social media page, she discovered the offending content.
Thomas, who boasts 1.4 million followers, candidly admitted to not being particularly “computer savvy.” She described her accidental repost as a result of her navigating the platform and her thumb inadvertently hitting the “repost” button while scrolling. She reiterated that she had “no clue that something like this happened until I got all the calls.”

Reports indicate that Thomas’s alleged donations included a sum of $210.60 to WinRed, a Republican fundraising platform, as noted by The Independent.
Past Controversies and Public Statements
This is not the first time Thomas has faced public scrutiny for her statements. In 2017, she also sparked backlash after expressing the sentiment that “all lives matter” during an interview with U.K. Channel 4 News. At the time, she explained her perspective, stating, “For me, all lives matter, because there’s a time when different groups are targeted for different things. Even with the police brutality against these young black boys and stuff like that, all of that kind of stuff is wrong. Even if it was a Caucasian teen kid this was happening to, it’s just not right.” She further commented on the need for better screening for individuals in positions of authority, suggesting, “I think that before people are hired in these positions, they need to do some kind of better background check or mental stability check on them to see if they can really handle being in a position like that.”

Upcoming Tour and TLC’s Legacy
Despite these recent controversies, Thomas and her TLC bandmate Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins are gearing up for the highly anticipated “It’s Iconic Tour.” They will be joined by fellow legendary female groups Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue, promising a nostalgic and powerful series of performances. The tour is scheduled to commence on August 15th in Franklin, Tennessee, and will wrap up in October in Concord, California. Fans can also catch the iconic trio in cities such as Des Moines, Tampa, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Toronto.
This reunion follows a recent performance by Thomas and Watkins at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards held in Los Angeles. TLC, originally formed in 1990, comprised Thomas, Watkins, and the late Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes. The group achieved immense success with timeless hits like “No Scrubs” and “Creep.” The tragic passing of Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes in 2002 at the age of 30 continues to be a significant moment in music history.

In a past interview on Good Morning Britain, Thomas addressed the sensitive topic of potentially replacing Lopes in the group after her death. She firmly stated, “We heard from so many people, in the business, that surprised us more than anything. The fans, not so much. It was never ever a thought to replace her, no one in TLC can be replaced. Nobody can fill those shoes.” Since Lopes’ passing, Thomas and Watkins have continued to perform as a duo, honouring the legacy of TLC.
