Swedish pop sensation Robyn, known for her electrifying hits and distinctive style, recently offered a deeply personal and candid look into her journey towards single motherhood through in vitro fertilization (IVF). At 46, the artist, whose real name is Robin Miriam Carlsson, has navigated the complex realities of IVF and the profound challenges of raising a child alone, a path she chose after a significant life event.
Her story, shared in a recent interview, sheds light not only on the arduous physical and emotional toll of IVF but also on societal perceptions of single mothers and the personal sacrifices involved in pursuing parenthood outside a traditional partnership. Robyn’s experience underscores the growing number of individuals opting for alternative routes to parenthood and the inherent difficulties that accompany these choices.
The catalyst for Robyn’s decision to undergo IVF was a breakup in 2020. While many might see this as a setback, for Robyn, it presented a stark choice. She had previously frozen her eggs at the age of 34, a forward-thinking decision that provided her with options later in life. However, as she approached her early 40s, the prospect of having children within an unstable relationship felt increasingly untenable and, in her words, “very risky” and “scary.”
Robyn reflected on the deeply personal and “extremely existential” feelings that arose as she grappled with the idea of parenthood. She admitted to initially feeling like a “failure” because her vision of having a child had always involved a partner and a seemingly more conventional timeline. The idea of a child existing within a relationship that wasn’t ideal weighed heavily on her.
“I think motherhood in a conventional heterosexual relationship, in my life at least, has been really hard to reconcile with what I think I would have to do to make that work,” she shared. “I would have been able to accept things that weren’t great in a relationship without children. But, when kids exist, every single thing that the other person does is so important.” The responsibility that comes with parenthood amplifies the stakes of any relationship, a reality Robyn recognised as too precarious to navigate with a young child involved.
Embarking on the IVF journey in her early 40s brought its own set of anxieties. Robyn acknowledged that being older meant uncertainty about the success of the process. She underwent “a few rounds” of IVF, describing the experience as a “f***ing roller coaster.” The physical and psychological demands were significant, pushing her to confront fundamental questions about her identity.
“It was a f***ing roller coaster, but also it makes you think about things that you otherwise wouldn’t. What is my identity as someone with children, and what is it without? It’s extremely existential,” she explained. The desire to become a parent was undeniable, a deep-seated “need” that she felt was as fundamental as asking “Why are we here?”
Despite the emotional and physical rigours, Robyn also framed her experience within a broader context of privilege. “It’s definitely a challenge, physically and psychologically. But ‘boohoo, I had to do IVF,’ it’s also a privilege. The fact that it’s even possible! It’s something that costs money, and a lot of people don’t even have the option.” This perspective highlights the stark reality that access to fertility treatments remains a significant barrier for many.
Robyn welcomed her son, Tyko, in July 2023. While the joy of motherhood is immense, she has been open about the demanding nature of raising a toddler as a single parent. “It’s very, very taxing to be a single mum or dad,” she stated. Her own childhood experiences, growing up with divorced parents, deeply influenced her approach to parenting.
She recalled her mother’s struggles, noting the exhaustion and the constant effort required to manage life as a single parent. “My mother was tired and she was struggling, and I just didn’t want to repeat things that I’d been through as a kid,” Robyn explained. Her desire was to avoid the lack of time and energy that can impact a parent’s ability to be fully present and happy in their situation.
Robyn’s narrative also touches upon the societal gaze directed at single mothers. While she doesn’t explicitly detail external judgments, her openness about her choice and the challenges involved implicitly challenges conventional norms. Her decision to pursue parenthood on her own terms, prioritising her child’s well-being and her own agency, is a powerful statement.
The journey of IVF, especially as a single individual, is often a solitary one, marked by medical appointments, emotional highs and lows, and the constant hope for a positive outcome. Robyn’s willingness to share these intimate details serves as a beacon for others navigating similar paths, offering a sense of solidarity and validation.
Robyn’s story is a testament to the evolving landscape of family building. It highlights the strength, resilience, and deep desire that can drive individuals to become parents, regardless of their relationship status. Her candid reflections on the physical, emotional, and societal aspects of her IVF and single motherhood journey offer a profound insight into the modern pursuit of parenthood.
