Robertson: Liverpool Future Decided Pre-World Cup

Robertson Eyes Clarity on Liverpool Future Before World Cup Campaign

Scotland captain Andy Robertson is aiming to have his future at Liverpool resolved before he embarks on the highly anticipated World Cup journey this summer. With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, the veteran left-back, who has experienced a more limited role at Anfield this term, is keen to finalise his next move. Robertson, a key figure for Scotland, is determined to lead his nation into their first World Cup finals in 28 years with his club situation settled.

“Will I make a decision before the World Cup? Yeah, that will definitely happen,” Robertson stated ahead of Scotland’s friendly against Japan at Hampden. “For me, I will make up my mind before the summer and it’s always been in my head that I don’t want it hanging over me. I think that’s important, I don’t think anyone wants that and everyone would be in the same boat. If you’re out of contract and sign a new contract, or whatever you’re doing – you always want that sorted before you go into a big tournament. I have always worked towards and have been consistent with. It’s only eight or nine weeks, so from now until the end I’ll sit down with my family and see what we want.”

The 32-year-old defender, who has enjoyed a distinguished nine-year tenure with Liverpool, is reportedly attracting interest from various clubs. While speculation has even linked him with a potential return to his boyhood club, Celtic, Robertson remains tight-lipped about specific possibilities. “It’s not really one to talk about,” he commented when questioned about the Parkhead club. “Obviously I was at Celtic as a kid and had a season ticket, that’s not a secret. But it’s not something I really want to get into. The options that are on the table for me at the minute will stay private and that’s the way I’ve always done it. People can talk and there’s been a lot of talk around it, where I’m going to go next. I’ve seen it but I stay away from it all now.”

Tartan Army’s Support Appreciated Amidst Cost Concerns

Robertson also addressed the unwavering support of the Scotland faithful, the Tartan Army, who are expected to travel in significant numbers to cheer on the team in America. The squad is eager to provide memorable moments for their dedicated supporters, who face considerable expenses for travel and accommodation to support the team in their matches against Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil, spread across Boston and Miami.

Concerns have been raised by various supporters’ groups regarding the “astronomical” ticket prices and the overall cost of attending the tournament. Robertson acknowledged these challenges, expressing empathy for those making the journey.

“It’s expensive, we have all our families and friends paying silly money to come and watch us,” Robertson remarked. “It’s something we can’t control obviously. The gaffer has been consistent in saying people shouldn’t put themselves into massive amounts of debt to come over. The people who are going over to America, making long journeys and paying a lot of money to be there – we always appreciate the support. Our away ends are always full, we always the best-supported team at tournaments. The numbers going over will be big. We know that and never take it for granted. We just hope we can give them something to shout about and give them days to remember.”

The captain’s commitment to resolving his club future promptly underscores his focus on leading Scotland effectively through a major international tournament. His words also highlight a shared sentiment within the squad: a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by fans and a strong desire to deliver performances that justify the commitment and expense involved in following the team across the globe. The upcoming World Cup represents a significant opportunity for both Robertson and the Scottish national team to create lasting memories for their passionate supporters.
