MQM Demands Swift 28th Amendment Action

MQM Advocates for 28th Constitutional Amendment to Empower Citizens Amidst National Challenges

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has issued a strong call for the immediate enactment of the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment, asserting that it is imperative for political stakeholders to place the empowerment of the public at the forefront of national priorities. This demand comes at a time when Pakistan faces a complex array of evolving national challenges, including a protracted regional conflict that has now extended to the nation’s borders.

During a press conference, MQM-Pakistan Chairman Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, accompanied by prominent party leaders Mustafa Kamal, Amin Haq, and Anees Qaimkhani, articulated the party’s stance. Siddiqui highlighted that a conflict, which has been simmering for three to four decades, has now reached Pakistan’s frontiers. He acknowledged and praised the efforts of the government and the armed forces in their endeavours to contain and mitigate these hostilities.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui reaffirmed the MQM’s unwavering support for diplomatic solutions, including dialogue and mediation. He underscored the critical distinction between the responsibility of the armed forces in national defence and the pervasive impact of conflict on the entire populace. “While our armed forces are entrusted with the monumental task of defending our borders, the repercussions of war are felt by every citizen,” Siddiqui stated. He strongly advocated for the devolution of governance in regions affected by conflict, asserting that power should be directly vested in the hands of the people residing in these areas.

Challenging Dynastic Politics and Advocating for True Representation

A significant point of contention raised by MQM leaders was the pervasive issue of dynastic politics. Siddiqui argued that the fundamental right to vote is an equal entitlement for all citizens, not merely a privilege extended to electoral candidates. He called for a definitive end to hereditary power structures that, he contended, undermine democratic principles and public will. The proposed 28th Amendment, according to the MQM, is designed to facilitate genuine and meaningful public participation in the governance of the nation, ensuring that the voices of ordinary citizens are heard and heeded.

The party leaders also drew attention to the MQM’s current limited representation at the national level, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive and strategic approaches to effectively manage and address the emerging security challenges that the country is confronting.

Economic Stability and Public Input

On the economic front, Siddiqui addressed the ongoing national crisis, revealing that various measures are under active consideration, including the potential implementation of lockdowns. He stressed that any decision of such magnitude, which directly impacts the lives and livelihoods of citizens, must be preceded by comprehensive public consultation and input. “The economic well-being of our nation is intrinsically linked to the well-being of its people. Therefore, decisions affecting our economy must reflect the collective wisdom and concerns of the public,” he remarked.

The MQM leader concluded by directly appealing to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging the government to take decisive action and fulfil the MQM’s long-standing demand for enhanced public empowerment. He reiterated that the Constitution of Pakistan unequivocally guarantees the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights, and it is the government’s solemn duty to uphold these principles through concrete policy and legislative action. The party remains committed to advocating for a governance model that prioritises the people and their inherent right to participate in the decision-making processes that shape their future.
