Minister: Mandelson Criticism Nears Conspiracy Theory

Government Minister Slams “Conspiracy Theories” Amidst Mandelson Appointment Controversy

A senior government minister has strongly criticised opponents, accusing them of venturing into “conspiracy theory territory” as questions intensify over communications between prominent figure Peter Mandelson and a former chief advisor to Keir Starmer. The row centres on the theft of a government-issued mobile phone belonging to Morgan McSweeney, which was reportedly stolen during a mugging last year.

The loss of this device, taken on a London street, has become a focal point of the controversy, as it means crucial messages potentially relating to Lord Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador will not be made public. This situation arises in the wake of parliamentary efforts in February to compel the release of tens of thousands of documents. The objective behind this push was to ascertain the extent of knowledge regarding Lord Mandelson’s past associations with Jeffrey Epstein prior to him being offered the prestigious diplomatic role in Washington.

Opposition Demands for Transparency

Among the opposition politicians raising concerns is Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch. She has publicly questioned the circumstances surrounding the phone theft, suggesting that the incident is “fishy” and warrants further investigation.

However, Bridget Phillipson, the minister in question, vehemently defended the government’s position. Speaking on Sky News’ Sunday Morning with Trevor Philips, Ms Phillipson dismissed questions about the theft as “rubbish” and “hyperbole.” She asserted, “Morgan McSweeney was mugged, reported it to the police, followed all of the processes that were asked of him. I do think some of this wider coverage is drifting into conspiracy theory territory here.”

Ms Phillipson further emphasised that Mr McSweeney had cooperated fully, stating, “Morgan McSweeney has done what was asked of him. He will provide and is providing any material that is required.”

Counter-Accusations and Calls for Accountability

Mrs Badenoch, however, was quick to refute Ms Phillipson’s claims. Speaking on the same programme, she retorted, “This is not a conspiracy theory. Questions need to be answered and he should come into Parliament and explain what happened.” She directly addressed the role of Mr McSweeney, stating, “This is the man who advised the appointment of Peter Mandelson’s appointment, something we’ve now seen has been a huge cover-up.”

Emerging Details on Additional Devices

Adding another layer to the unfolding situation, recent revelations indicate that Mr McSweeney was in possession of two additional mobile phones that could potentially hold messages pertinent to Peter Mandelson’s US ambassadorial appointment. Consequently, he is now facing demands to disclose communications from these private devices.

The pressure on Mr McSweeney to provide a comprehensive account of the theft, which he reported last October, has intensified. This comes at a time when Members of Parliament were actively seeking the disclosure of correspondence that might shed light on why Lord Mandelson was appointed to the role, despite his documented connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

It has also emerged that in the days leading up to Mr McSweeney reporting his phone stolen, Downing Street aides were reportedly engaged in meetings to strategise on how to handle “Morgan’s messages.” This was happening concurrently with Conservative Party efforts to use parliamentary procedures to force the release of all communications concerning Lord Mandelson’s appointment and subsequent resignation.

On October 20th, Mr McSweeney, who held the position of No 10 chief of staff at the time, reported that his official iPhone had been stolen in London. Following his report to Downing Street, the device was remotely wiped.

Further investigation by The Mail on Sunday has uncovered that Mr McSweeney also owned two personal phones. One of these devices was reportedly deactivated earlier this year, while the other remains active. When questioned over the weekend about whether all his phones had been examined for relevant messages, a No 10 spokesperson stated that the process of requesting messages pertaining to Lord Mandelson from “relevant individuals” was still ongoing. This ongoing situation continues to fuel scrutiny and calls for greater transparency from the government.
