McSweeney Faces MPs Over Missing Mandelson Messages

Political Storm Brews Over Missing Phone and Ambassadorial Appointment

A political firestorm is intensifying in Australia, with ministers expressing grave concerns that a key figure, Morgan McSweeney, could be compelled to testify before parliamentary committees. The catalyst for this escalating drama is the reported theft of his mobile phone, which allegedly contains hundreds of messages exchanged with a controversial peer, Peter Mandelson. The revelation has triggered a frantic scramble by officials to recover these communications, amid fears that a lack of transparency could force McSweeney to give evidence under oath.

The Cabinet Office has now formally requested that Lord Mandelson provide the messages stored on his personal phone. This action comes nearly two months after parliamentary members initially demanded their public disclosure. Simultaneously, ministers and their advisors are being asked to submit messages from group chats, which are believed to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador. This appointment has been a point of contention, particularly given prior warnings about his “close” association with the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Accusations of Dereliction of Duty and Calls for Transparency

The delay in securing these crucial messages has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. Alex Burghart, a frontbencher for the Conservative Party, labelled the failure to act sooner as a “complete dereliction of duty.” He articulated a strong stance, stating, “They knew that Morgan McSweeney’s phone had gone missing in action. They knew Parliament demanded full transparency. And they failed to act.” Burghart further condemned the situation as “shameful” and asserted, “There can be no more cover up. The public deserve to know the full truth about Keir Starmer’s appalling judgment. We will hold them to account until they do get that truth.”

This latest development follows closely on the heels of Kemi Badenoch’s indication that she was prepared to initiate another vote in the House of Commons to mandate Mr. McSweeney’s testimony.

Badenoch stated, “If No 10 are incapable of recovering these messages, it is only right that Morgan McSweeney testifies in Parliament and explains exactly what happened and why Keir Starmer signed off on Peter Mandelson’s appointment despite the warnings.”

Labour MPs Express Doubts and Call for Accountability

The narrative surrounding the missing phone and the subsequent events has not been met with universal acceptance, even within the Labour party. Some Labour MPs are reportedly unconvinced by the official explanation and are considering joining forces with opposition backbenchers. Their aim would be to extract further information from Mr. McSweeney, particularly if the government can only produce a limited record of the communications.

Veteran Labour MP Karl Turner has gone as far as to brand the former top aide “McSwindle,” expressing his skepticism about the phone’s alleged theft. “I don’t believe McSwindle had his iPhone stolen,” Turner declared. “We mustn’t take the public for fools. And I am afraid this smacks of too convenient by far.”

A Shadowy Chain of Events and Unanswered Questions

Government sources acknowledged on Friday that the material pertaining to Mandelson’s appointment is still being collated. However, they conceded that Parliament could indeed seek more information from Mr. McSweeney. A Labour source described the prospect of McSweeney being required to give public evidence as “undesirable in every way.”

Downing Street confirmed earlier this week that Mr. McSweeney reported his phone was stolen late at night on October 20 last year. This incident occurred mere days after Labour advisors had reportedly discussed the possibility of Parliament demanding that he hand over his messages to Lord Mandelson.

However, the precise details of that evening remain obscured by a veil of mystery. Initially, allies of Mr. McSweeney claimed that the police had stated they were “too busy” to investigate the alleged theft.

In a surprising turn of events, the police issued a statement contradicting this account. They revealed that they had attempted to contact Mr. McSweeney twice the following day without receiving a response. In a highly unusual move, the police also released a transcript of his emergency 999 call. This transcript reportedly showed that he failed to identify himself as the Prime Minister’s chief of staff and provided an incorrect address. The unfolding situation continues to raise significant questions about transparency, accountability, and the integrity of political appointments.
