Punjab Achieves Historic Price Stability During Ramadan
Lahore, Pakistan – Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has declared that the province experienced an unprecedented period of low prices for fruits, vegetables, and essential commodities during the recent Ramadan observance. This significant achievement, she stated, is a direct result of proactive government intervention and stringent market surveillance.
In a public address, the Chief Minister lauded her administration’s efforts, characterizing the success in price control as a landmark accomplishment that provided substantial financial relief to millions of citizens. The initiative, aimed at ensuring affordability and accessibility of essential goods, proved remarkably effective.
Unprecedented Turnout and Savings at Facilitation Markets
Officials reported a record-breaking attendance at the province’s dedicated facilitation markets. Consumers reportedly purchased an astonishing 36.9 million kilograms of various food items. Crucially, these goods were offered at prices that were, in some instances, up to 40% lower than those found in the open market. This widespread availability of discounted goods allowed the public to collectively save billions of rupees. A particularly impactful measure was the reduction in flour prices under official rates, a move that significantly eased the financial burden on households.
The comprehensive network of facilitation markets was established under the Punjab Sahulat Bazaars Authority. This network comprised a total of 80 distinct market setups, encompassing permanent, mobile, and temporary locations. These markets served as vital hubs for affordable provisions, welcoming more than 40 million visitors throughout the province during the Ramadan period.
Innovative Digital Reach and Consumer Engagement
Beyond the physical marketplaces, the provincial government embraced digital solutions to extend its reach and enhance consumer convenience. A dedicated digital home delivery system was implemented, successfully processing over 37,000 individual orders. This service not only offered the convenience of doorstep delivery but also provided free delivery, contributing further to the cost savings experienced by consumers.
In a pioneering move, the authorities also introduced a direct feedback mechanism. This innovative system was designed to facilitate immediate resolution of public grievances and complaints. Coupled with strict digital monitoring protocols, it ensured consistent compliance with quality standards and price regulations across all participating vendors and markets.
Commitment to Public Welfare and Future Models
The Chief Minister specifically commended the diligence and performance of the Punjab Sahulat Bazaars Authority’s team. Special mention was made of Chairman Afzal Khokhar, acknowledging their pivotal role in ensuring the consistent availability of food items that were both affordable and of high quality.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif reiterated the provincial government’s unwavering commitment to public welfare and the maintenance of price stability. She posited the Ramadan 2026 initiative as a benchmark and a successful model for effective public service delivery, demonstrating that targeted government action can yield tangible benefits for the populace. The success of these measures is expected to inform future strategies for price control and consumer protection in Punjab.
