London Suburb: Illegal Driver Crackdown Seizes 19 Vehicles, Two Immigrants Arrested

The streets of Wandsworth, South London, became the scene of a significant immigration and traffic enforcement operation yesterday afternoon, as Metropolitan Police officers, working in conjunction with Home Office immigration enforcement, targeted delivery drivers. The coordinated effort, which saw a busy road cordoned off with traffic cones, resulted in the seizure of 19 vehicles and the arrest of two individuals.

Footage captured from a passing bus revealed a tense situation as officers engaged with a group of moped delivery riders who had been stopped. Many of the riders, identifiable by the distinctive container boxes affixed to their vehicles, were seen dismounted and speaking with law enforcement. Detectives were observed meticulously examining the contents of these containers, with one insulated bag, belonging to a prominent delivery company, placed on the grass verge beside the road. The operation appeared pre-planned, with a large flatbed truck present to transport the seized mopeds, and officers also seen interacting with a van driver.

Immigration Act Enforcement

The operation led to the arrest of two individuals under the provisions of Section 24(1)(b)(i) of the Immigration Act 1971. A Pakistani national was apprehended for being an overstayer, while an Indian national was arrested for breaching immigration bail conditions.

Vehicle Seizures and Traffic Offences

Beyond the immigration-related arrests, the crackdown also focused on traffic violations. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that the operation was aimed at addressing uninsured or unlicensed drivers in the Wandsworth area. In total, 20 vehicles were seized during the operation, and dozens of traffic offence reports were issued to drivers who were stopped. The reasons for seizure varied, with some mopeds and electric scooters suspected of being stolen, while others were allegedly used in the commission of vehicle thefts.

Government Stance on Illegal Working

A spokesperson for the Home Office underscored the government’s commitment to tackling illegal working, stating that it “undermines honest employers, undercuts local wages and fuels organised immigration crime.” The spokesperson further highlighted the government’s intensified enforcement efforts, reporting an 83 per cent increase in illegal working arrests and a 77 per cent rise in raids since coming into power, asserting that immigration enforcement action has reached its highest level in British history.

The Plight of Delivery Riders

This recent enforcement action occurs in the wake of a comprehensive three-week investigation into food delivery riders, which revealed a stark reality for many working in London. The investigation uncovered instances of riders sleeping rough and relying on soup kitchens, challenging the perception that these roles are primarily filled by unskilled labour. In fact, the investigation highlighted that a significant portion of the estimated 20,000 drivers in the capital are often young graduates and trained professionals, leading a precarious existence to transport takeaway orders across the city.

Government Crackdown on Asylum Seekers in Delivery Sector

In recent months, the government has been intensifying its efforts to curb asylum seekers taking up roles within the delivery sector. Home Office officials have been actively targeting identified hotspots for illegal working. Under current UK law, asylum seekers are generally prohibited from working while their claims are being processed. While permission to work can be sought after a year of waiting, the government has also taken steps to disrupt potential employment patterns, with ministers announcing last year their intention to share information about asylum hotel locations with food delivery firms.

In response to these concerns and regulatory pressures, major food delivery platforms such as Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat have pledged to enhance their verification processes. These companies have stated their intention to ramp up facial verification and fraud checks to prevent individuals from working as riders without the necessary permissions.
