Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Professional singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is navigating a challenging period as he works to regain his peak performance following an ankle injury. Despite the setback, the Malaysian star remains steadfast in his commitment to training for the upcoming Thomas Cup, a crucial team event for the nation.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is mobilising its resources to support Zii Jia’s recovery. Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, who chairs BAM’s performance committee, confirmed that a dedicated team is in place to aid the player. This includes national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen, men’s singles head coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock, and Zii Jia’s personal coach, Liew Daren. Their collective efforts are aimed at ensuring Zii Jia is in optimal condition before the Thomas Cup commences on April 24th in Horsens, Denmark.
Chong Wei has openly acknowledged the visible dip in Zii Jia’s performance and, more significantly, his confidence levels post-injury. He noted that the mental toll of the injury has been a considerable factor, impacting Zii Jia’s on-court presence. To address this holistically, Chong Wei has also engaged with the National Sports Institute (NSI). The objective is to guarantee that the entire Malaysian squad, with Zii Jia as a key focus, receives the highest standard of care and treatment to minimise the risk of further injuries.
Drawing from his own extensive career, Lee Chong Wei understands the psychological impact of injuries and performance slumps. “I’m not sure exactly what the issue is, but I feel he has not recovered 100% from his injury,” Chong Wei shared with Berita Harian. “I’ve seen him play, but the confidence is missing. He seems lost in terms of what to do on court.”
The veteran shuttler pointed to Zii Jia’s recent performances in tournaments like the Orleans Masters as evidence of his struggles. “In several recent tournaments, including the Orleans Masters, he did not perform well. As I said, this is related to confidence, and that is one of the areas we are trying to help him with. We hope that training with us will benefit him,” Chong Wei added.
Inspired by his own experiences during periods of inconsistency, Chong Wei recalled seeking guidance from Liew Daren to develop a specialised training program designed to rebuild his confidence for team events. He believes that a similar approach could be instrumental for Zii Jia.
“All he needs is a win, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a major tournament or otherwise, as it would help boost his confidence.” This sentiment underscores the belief that a single positive result could be the catalyst for Zii Jia’s resurgence.
However, Zii Jia’s journey back has been far from smooth. His failure to qualify for the Orleans Masters in France marked another difficult week, highlighting the ongoing nature of his recovery. The focus has been heavily placed on physiotherapy to address his back injury, a crucial component in his rehabilitation process. The path back to his former glory is a testament to his resilience and the dedicated support system surrounding him as he aims to make a significant impact at the Thomas Cup. The dedication of coaches and support staff, coupled with Zii Jia’s own determination, will be key to his success in the coming months.
