Kim Yu-na, Ban Su-yeon: Masters of Authentic Artistry

Literary Luminaries Vie for Dongin Award: Authenticity and Immigrant Narratives Shine

The literary world is abuzz as two compelling works have advanced to the final round of the prestigious Dongin Literary Award this month. The judging committee, comprised of esteemed writers Jeong Myeong-kyo, Koo Hyo-seo, Lee Seung-woo, Kim In-sook, and Kim Dong-sik, convened for their monthly reading session, ultimately selecting Kim Yu-na’s short story collection, A Truth That Can Be Believed, and Ban Su-yeon’s Part-Time Traveler as the leading contenders. The review process focused on works published between December of last year and January of this year. Notably, Ban Su-yeon’s Part-Time Traveler, though published in September of the previous year, earned a place in the finals due to overwhelming sentiment that its omission would be a significant oversight.

Kim Yu-na: Unveiling the Unseen World

Kim Yu-na, who made her literary debut in 2020 with the Changbi New Writer’s Novel Award, presents a collection of seven short stories that masterfully capture the poignant realities of ordinary life. Her prose is characterized by its conciseness and precision, eschewing superfluous elements to deliver a potent emotional impact. Despite this being her inaugural collection, critics have lauded its remarkable solidity.

Judge Kim In-sook drew an intriguing parallel between Kim Yu-na’s storytelling and the “lat pulldown” exercise, a movement that targets the often-unseen latissimus dorsi muscles of the back. “The latissimus dorsi is a muscle on the back that cannot even be seen,” Kim explained. “What Kim Yu-na seems to be portraying in her stories is perhaps the world behind the back.” This analogy suggests that Kim Yu-na’s narratives delve into the hidden struggles and unspoken burdens that shape individuals’ lives.

Further elaborating on the appeal of Kim Yu-na’s work, Judge Koo Hyo-seo highlighted a unique deconstructive technique. He observed, “The moment of dismantling where characters who initially appear unlikable are transformed into strangely appealing beings, and the bondage of ‘names’ is untangled with her unique deconstruction technique.” This suggests a nuanced exploration of character development, where initial impressions are challenged and deeper, more complex personalities emerge.

Judge Jeong Myeong-kyo commended the meticulous craftsmanship of Kim Yu-na’s writing, noting, “The depiction of event progression is very dense and precise. It vividly conveys the shifting movements of the mind moment by moment.” However, she also pointed out a potential limitation: “The narrow context due to the focused lens makes it difficult to escape beyond it.” This critique implies that while the stories are intensely focused, their limited scope might prevent broader engagement with universal themes.

Ban Su-yeon: The Resilient Journey of the Immigrant

Ban Su-yeon brings a rich and distinctive life experience to her literary contributions. Her journey as an immigrant to Canada in 1998, at the age of 33, has profoundly shaped her narrative voice. Her short story, Memorial Garden, which tenderly portrays the complexities of Canadian immigrant society, garnered recognition by winning this newspaper’s New Year’s Literary Contest in 2005. Her consistent acclaim is further evidenced by four wins of the Overseas Korean Literature Award.

Part-Time Traveler is a testament to this deeply personal connection, weaving vivid immigrant narratives throughout its pages. Among its notable inclusions is Where the Sugar Factory Once Stood, a poignant depiction of the survival challenges faced by an immigrant from Dongducheon’s base village in the bustling environment of Brooklyn, New York. The titular story, Part-Time Traveler, centers on a woman who, having severed her connections, embarks on a solitary odyssey through the iconic national parks of the United States.

Judge Kim Dong-sik characterized Ban Su-yeon’s work as “a female immigrant narrative captured in the form of ‘late-life sustenance.’” He elaborated, “Even in extreme situations where life is taken away or abandoned by everyone, she continues to pursue the proactivity of becoming a beautiful and strong solitary individual.” This highlights the resilience and self-discovery inherent in the characters’ journeys.

Judge Jeong Myeong-kyo’s focus was on “the forms of life lived by those who have been driven out,” suggesting an exploration of marginalization and the human spirit’s response to displacement. Offering a strong endorsement of Ban Su-yeon’s literary style, Judge Lee Seung-woo stated, “The writer’s straightforward and diligent prose, which avoids gimmicks, pretentiousness, or chasing accidental luck or windfalls, is trustworthy.” This praise underscores the authenticity and groundedness of her storytelling.

The Dongin Literary Award continues to be a significant platform for recognizing literary excellence, and the final selection promises a rich and diverse reading experience, celebrating both introspective depth and the enduring spirit of human experience.
