Since her departure from Royal Lodge and subsequent “exile,” Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, has executed a vanishing act of impressive proportions. For months, speculation has been rife about her whereabouts, with the public gripped by this modern-day mystery. Last seen in public in London on December 12th at the christening of her youngest granddaughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi, the 66-year-old has seemingly disappeared from view, particularly in the wake of the ongoing fallout from her association with the late Jeffrey Epstein.
Now, three months on, as theories about her location reach fever pitch, could the Duchess herself have inadvertently left a trail of breadcrumbs pointing to her secret sanctuary? Investigations have revealed a global network of loyal friends, ready and willing to offer her refuge. Indeed, an extensive list of acknowledgements in her memoir, Finding Sarah – an aptly named tome penned during a previous low point after a 2010 scandal involving an offer to sell access to Prince Andrew – hints at the breadth of her support system.
The question on everyone’s lips remains: “Where’s Fergie?” And more importantly, who is providing her with a safe haven in this clandestine, global tour of sofas?
The United States has historically been a go-to destination for the former Duchess in times of need, offering a range of potential hideouts from sprawling ranches in Arizona to chic apartments in New York. An associate who communicated with her via email only weeks ago confirmed she was “under a lot of stress.”
One possibility is the Beverly Hills mansion owned by Olivier de Givenchy and his wife Zoe. In 2018, Ferguson shared an Instagram photo from a sunny harbour, thanking the couple for their “kindness,” leading to speculation she was staying at their $9 million Beverly Hills home or their seven-bedroom Malibu oceanfront property. Their 16th-century chateau in France’s Loire Valley also presents a potential European alternative.
Another long-time confidante is holistic healer Anamika Neitlich, who provided refuge for two weeks in Montecito following Ferguson’s 2010 crisis, reportedly helping to “calm the rough waters of my mind and soul.” However, a potential awkward encounter could arise if she were to cross paths with fellow residents Prince Harry and Meghan, who are not believed to be fans.
Other US boltholes include the Big Sky Ranch in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, where Ferguson has previously found solace in “equine therapy,” or the zen-like Hall Center in Santa Monica, California, managed by menopause guru and friend, Prudence Hall.
Palm Beach, Florida, has also been mentioned, not only due to her past friendship with Epstein, who owned property there, but also her frequent visits supporting the Cancer Alliance and Hope & Help charities. During a speech last year, she even declared, “Palm Beach feels like home.”
Intriguingly, some theories suggest a reunion with Priscilla Presley at her lavish Los Angeles residence. Ferguson was a close friend of Priscilla’s late daughter, Lisa Marie, and delivered a heartfelt speech at her 2023 funeral. An insider revealed to Heat World that Priscilla “won’t ever forget how kind Sarah was to Lisa Marie when she was deep in her addiction struggles” and is “happy to be able to offer her some support,” having reportedly lent her a guest house and offered encouragement. Another source told RadarOnline that Ferguson “doesn’t have anything resembling a settled home base, so she’s leaning heavily on the goodwill and support of a small circle of trusted friends,” describing her situation as being “in hiding like some kind of fugitive, moving discreetly between locations and trying to keep a low profile.”
However, a significant reason for potentially avoiding the US could be the growing pressure for her to testify regarding her ties to Epstein. This week, US Congressman Suhas Subramanyam formally requested Ferguson’s testimony as part of a US government investigation into the convicted financier’s sex-trafficking operations.
A family friend has indicated that Ferguson travelled to Zurich in December and spent at least a month at the exclusive Paracelsus Recovery clinic, a lakeside wellness centre costing approximately £13,000 per day. She had previously sought refuge there last July, with the friend noting, “Nobody would know she was there apart from staff. It could not be more private.”
More recently, in February, she was reportedly sighted at Cork airport, Ireland, potentially en route to Ballyliffin Lodge and Spa in Donegal. This family-run hotel, offering stunning views of the Wild Atlantic Way, is a place Ferguson has visited twice this year, describing it in a TikTok video as a destination she frequents when life becomes “overwhelming.”
Another strong contender for her current location is a Spanish finca in Sotogrande, near Marbella, owned by close family friend Edwina Heyes. In Finding Sarah, Ferguson recalled a previous crisis trip where she felt she had returned to “the old life I once knew,” a time when she “had no reputation and I could simply be myself.”
Austria also presents a potential safe haven. Two years ago, following a malignant melanoma diagnosis, she checked into the Mayrlife resort on Lake Altaussee, a retreat with a two-week stay costing up to £6,700. She posted a photo of herself on Instagram during a lakeside walk, thanking the staff for their “gentle care.”
Portugal, where her youngest daughter Princess Eugenie resides with her family in a £3.6 million coastal villa in Melides, is another possibility. However, both Eugenie and her sister Beatrice are reportedly attempting to maintain a distance from their parents to protect their own reputations. A source close to Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank stated, “Eugenie and Jack are resisting any suggestion from the mother that she should come and live with them. Because, to be frank, Sarah is difficult to live with and they don’t want the responsibility of looking after her at the moment.”
Despite the scandals that have impacted the royal family, Ferguson retains a significant support network within the UK. While rumours persist of sightings in her native Hampshire, where her half-brother Andrew manages the family farm, a royal source suggested, “My hunch is that she’s hidden away in the countryside, relying on Waitrose deliveries.” The source added, “She always loved dressing up, so disguising herself might not be too hard. But if that’s the case, she’ll be getting bored by now. Publicity is her oxygen.”
However, a move to York is unlikely, as councillors recently voted to strip her of the Freedom of the City. Another rumour points to her hiding at the Wiltshire home of her former flame, Paddy McNally, now 88. Ferguson dated the former racing driver and motorsports executive for three years before marrying Prince Andrew, and they have remained close despite their 22-year age gap. McNally’s other residences in Verbier, Switzerland, and St. Tropez, France, could also offer potential refuge.
Meanwhile, her eldest daughter Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi own a substantial £3.5 million home in the Cotswolds. Insiders suggest, however, that they are reluctant to have her move into their converted cowshed, with Edo reportedly tired of the “York drama” and urging his wife to “keep her distance.”
Until the recent outbreak of war, the Middle East, particularly the Gulf, might have seemed an ideal location for the globe-trotting Duchess to lie low. Reports surfaced just days before the conflict that she had travelled to the United Arab Emirates, where she and Prince Andrew are said to have access to a mini-palace gifted by Abu Dhabi ruler Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayhan.
Royal biographer Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise And Fall Of The House of York, believes the Middle East remains a prime location for the Duchess to remain under the radar, away from global conflicts. He told the Daily Mail, “Most people are getting out, so what better place to stay under the radar? People in the Middle East simply couldn’t care less what Sarah has done even if she doesn’t have her Duchess of York title any more. She will still be seen as royalty and treated as such.”
Lownie anticipates she would stay close to her Dubai-based friend and PR guru, James Henderson. Henderson provided crisis management for Ferguson in 2010 and, in turn, she supported him during his own downfall in 2017 when he resigned as CEO of PR firm Bell Pottinger after a scandal involving racial tensions in South Africa. Henderson again defended Ferguson last year when it emerged she had emailed Epstein in 2011, post-conviction, describing him as a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend.” In a September interview, Henderson described her as “generous” and “amazing,” adding, “We have both been loyal to each other. The mental impact of losing everything, and losing a reputation, is something that we could bond over.”
In previous times of trouble, Ferguson has sought solace in the East. The Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary on the Thai island of Koh Samui has been a favoured destination. She first visited in 2010 for a ten-day retreat with her older sister, Jane Ferguson Luedecke, following the cash-for-access scandal. She returned a year later, having been notably excluded from the guest list for Prince William’s 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton.
India, specifically the Soukya International Holistic Health Centre in Bangalore, run by Dr. Isaac Mathai, has also seen multiple visits from Ferguson. Notably, the centre has also hosted King Charles and Queen Camilla. Furthermore, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Ferguson is currently in China, a country where she has cultivated significant business connections. In 2020, during the early stages of the Covid pandemic, she offered to source personal protective equipment (PPE), claiming to have contacts in the country. The publisher of one of her children’s books, Flora & Fern: Kindness Along the Way (before its withdrawal from sale), was a Chinese government-owned corporation based in Zhejiang province. A well-placed royal source indicated to the Mail that China might serve as a “back-up plan.”
Back in 2010, still reeling from the News of the World exposé, Ferguson travelled to Yellowknife, Canada’s coldest city, embarking on what she described as “adventure as therapy.” Determined to banish her troubles, she camped in freezing temperatures and kayaked up rivers. Locals even spotted her at the Javaroma cafe, enjoying a strong coffee and a bagel. The owner, Rami Kassem, recalled her visit leaving “a big impression” on the locals, adding that Yellowknife “would be the perfect place for her to recoup again. You can be on the water in five minutes, fishing or in the forest. It’s quiet and welcoming.”
Could Ferguson be on the other side of the world, seeking refuge with her older sister Jane, who lives with her partner in a beachfront property in a luxury gated estate in New South Wales? Ferguson has turned to her sister in times of distress before, and Jane flew to the UK last year to support her disgraced sibling. In Finding Sarah, Ferguson described Jane as “one of my staunchest supporters,” acknowledging that her sister had “been forced to live, often uneasily and warily, in the harsh reflected glare of my endless torrent of criticism and scandal.”
However, a source told Australian magazine Woman’s Day last month that while Jane is “very protective,” her beachfront property, adjacent to a golf resort, offers limited privacy. “She would love nothing more than to offer a haven to Sarah here in Australia,” the source stated, “but they both know it would become a circus with photographers and the world’s Press on Jane’s doorstep. It’s far more likely that Jane will go to Sarah and try to help her decide what to do next.”
