Curran’s IPL 2026 Heartbreak: Missing Royals Action

Sam Curran Opens Up on Gruelling Groin Injury, Explains IPL 2026 Absence

England all-rounder Sam Curran has finally broken his silence regarding his unfortunate withdrawal from the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, citing a significant groin injury. The 27-year-old was poised to make a substantial impact for the Rajasthan Royals, having been acquired in a trade from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a considerable sum of Rs 2.40 crore in the preceding auction. Curran, widely recognised as one of the premier fast bowlers in the T20 cricket landscape in recent times, was expected to significantly bolster the Rajasthan squad. In a reciprocal trade, the Chennai Super Kings had secured the services of Sanju Samson.

Curran candidly revealed that he had been battling the debilitating groin injury throughout England’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, where the team ultimately fell short in the semi-finals against India at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Speaking to the BBC, Curran detailed the severity of his ailment: “It is a pretty significant groin injury which has sort of been a little niggle I have been dealing with for a little while now. It just gradually, fractionally got a bit worse and worse as the tournament went on, went for a couple of scans and it showed some reasonable damage so I had to make that tough call to go get the surgery and it was starting to hinder me quite a bit.”

He articulated his profound disappointment at being forced to miss the IPL, a tournament he clearly cherishes, but emphasised that his immediate focus is squarely on his recovery and rehabilitation. “To have missed the IPL was obviously very disappointing and now I guess I just have a rehab block of trying to get strong and fit for whenever it feels right,” he added.

In response to Curran’s unavailability, the Rajasthan Royals swiftly moved to secure Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan T20I captain, as a replacement. Shanaka was signed for Rs 2 crore earlier last week, highlighting the franchise’s proactive approach to managing player absences.

Rehabilitation and Future Prospects

Curran participated in all eight of England’s T20 World Cup fixtures. However, his current injury means he is now expected to miss a significant portion of Surrey’s County Championship matches. Furthermore, his availability to captain Surrey in the upcoming T20 Blast competition remains uncertain.

Reflecting on his immediate future, Sam Curran stated, “It all depends on symptoms, that obviously is still quite a way off and I guess this is obviously my first bit of rehab now at home in England, and it is going to be tough watching on the telly having known that I would have loved to have been in that IPL environment but injuries are part of the game.” This sentiment underscores the mental fortitude required to navigate the challenges of professional sport, particularly when forced to the sidelines by injury.

This unfortunate news for English cricket fans follows hot on the heels of another significant IPL withdrawal. England opener Ben Duckett also announced his decision to pull out of IPL 2026, citing fitness concerns as his primary motivation. Duckett’s intention is to prolong his international career, and he believes this break will be instrumental in achieving that goal. The Delhi Capitals had secured Duckett’s services for Rs 2 crore in the auctions, and his absence from the tournament for the next couple of years will undoubtedly be felt by the franchise.

Curran’s commitment to returning to his peak form for both his county, Surrey, and his country is unwavering. While his absence from the IPL 2026 will represent a considerable blow to the Rajasthan Royals’ aspirations, it appears to be a prudent and necessary decision for his long-term career. The focus now shifts to a dedicated rehabilitation process, with the hope of seeing Curran back on the field, performing at his formidable best, in the near future. The IPL, renowned for its demanding schedule and high-octane competition, often tests the physical limits of players, making such strategic decisions to prioritise health and longevity all the more critical.
