Curaçao, the Caribbean nation that has captured the hearts of many by qualifying for their maiden FIFA World Cup, has found their dream journey met with the harsh realities of international travel and geopolitical complexities. As the team embarked on their journey to Australia for crucial warm-up matches against China and the formidable Socceroos, their planned transit through Amsterdam and Dubai was rerouted due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This unexpected change necessitated a significantly longer and more convoluted flight path, taking them from Frankfurt to Singapore, a logistical challenge that brought considerable stress and required separate travel arrangements for various members of the squad and staff.
The upcoming encounter in Melbourne between Curaçao and Australia, two nations separated by vast oceans and an astronomical difference in size, marks a significant moment. Australia, a continent in itself, dwarfs the Caribbean island nation by approximately 17,000 times. Curaçao, with a modest population of just 155,000, holds the distinction of being the smallest country ever to reach the pinnacle of international football. Yet, beneath these stark disparities, the two teams share a surprisingly common thread as they gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On the opposition bench at AAMI Park, a familiar figure will be present in Roel Coumans. Coumans finds himself in a situation reminiscent of his past role as assistant coach to Bert van Marwijk during his brief tenure with the Socceroos, which culminated at the 2018 World Cup. Now, Coumans serves as the number two for Curaçao, having accepted the call from head coach Fred Rutten. Rutten took the reins in February, succeeding Dick Advocaat, who led the team through their historic qualification campaign, topping a group that included Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda.
The recent coaching merry-go-round in Curaçao mirrors the turbulent period Australia experienced leading up to the 2018 World Cup. “I was with Bert when we qualified with Saudi Arabia,” Coumans recalled. “In our group, we finished above Australia, and we qualified directly, but they sacked us.” This occurred in September 2017. The Socceroos subsequently secured their World Cup berth through the playoffs, but in November of that year, coach Ange Postecoglou resigned, paving the way for Van Marwijk’s appointment.
Coumans expressed his bewilderment at Postecoglou’s departure. “I still don’t understand why Ange did not go to the World Cup. He did a huge job, and there is more chemistry for a coach who has been through qualification with the players,” he stated. “When we came to Australia, we had not been through that together.” Taking over a team so close to a major tournament presented its own set of challenges. “In Australia, we knew that we had to disappoint some players, as they knew that with a new coach, things could change, and they might not go to the World Cup,” Coumans explained. “So, there was a little bit of tension.”
With Curaçao, the time constraint is even more acute. However, the smaller player pool offers a distinct advantage, as does the fact that the Dutch coaching staff are already intimately familiar with the squad. Curaçao, as a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, draws the vast majority of its players from the European nation, where they were born and raised. Prominent figures like captain Leandro Bacuna, a former Premier League player with Aston Villa, and his brother Juninho Bacuna, who previously played for Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town, represented the Netherlands at youth levels before pledging their international allegiance to Curaçao. The presence of former Manchester United midfielder Tahith Chong, now at Sheffield United, adds further European pedigree, though he is a rare native of Curaçao.
This depth of experience provides a degree of calm ahead of their daunting World Cup opener against Germany on June 14th. Coumans also draws inspiration from Australia’s opening fixture in the 2018 tournament against another European powerhouse. “France were so good they could have put three great teams on the pitch, but it was a close game,” he observed. The coach still recalls the irony of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which was being trialled in the A-League at the time, being used for the first time in a World Cup match against Australia. The Socceroos were on the wrong end of the inaugural VAR decision in their 2-1 defeat to France, when the referee consulted the monitor to award a penalty to the French. “The first match at a World Cup for a top team is a difficult one,” Coumans acknowledged. “Everyone expects a walkover, and it will not be. We are looking forward to it.”
Before the World Cup spotlight, Melbourne serves as the crucial final stage of Curaçao’s preparation. “Australian players are at a higher level than our players on average, but still, Australia is not Germany, and they have a different type of play. But the experience will be great for our players.”
Following their Australian sojourn, the countdown to facing Germany, Ecuador, and Côte d’Ivoire will intensify. A brief return to the southern Caribbean is planned for a farewell match against Aruba in the first week of June. “Now it is Australia, then Holland, Scotland, Curaçao, then Florida for our base camp.”
Upon their arrival in the United States, Curaçao anticipates a wave of support. “The team manager said that because we are the smallest country at the World Cup, and every fan has a second, underdog team that they like, it seems that will be Curaçao, especially for people in Holland who will really support us.”
Despite their world ranking of 76, the team harbours ambitions of making their mark. “There is always a chance,” Coumans asserted. “It’s football. They have one massive quality – the players are so eager to fight for each other. They will go to the limit to get a result.”
