APC Gears Up for Landmark 8th National Convention in Abuja
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is on the cusp of its 8th National Convention, a pivotal two-day event scheduled to commence in Abuja on Friday. An estimated 8,453 delegates are expected to converge on the nation’s capital for what is being hailed as a defining moment for the ruling party.
During a World Media Briefing held at the Transcorp Hilton, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, outlined the significance of the convention. He described it as a crucial juncture for the APC, aimed at solidifying its unity, fostering democratic growth, and charting a strategic course under the banner of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
The convention, slated to take place from March 27th to 28th at the iconic Eagle Square, will serve as a critical platform for delegates representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Their primary mandate will be to elect new party leaders, conduct a thorough review of existing policies, and set a clear direction for the APC’s trajectory in the coming years.
“This is not merely a routine gathering,” Minister Idris emphasized. “It represents a moment of profound reflection, consolidation, and strategic planning. It underscores our unwavering commitment to democratic values and our dedication to national development.”
Theme and Objectives: Unity in Progress
The convention will be held under the overarching theme, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda.” This theme signals the party’s intent to reinforce its internal cohesion while ensuring that its organizational structures are harmoniously aligned with the broader governance priorities of the nation.
Minister Idris highlighted the APC’s consistent ability to maintain its status as a dominant political force. This, he attributed to its adeptness in managing leadership transitions and its capacity to integrate diverse interests within a unified and cohesive framework.
Preparations for the convention have reportedly been meticulously concluded. Various committees have been working diligently to finalize operational details, ensuring that the entire process will be transparent and credible. “We are confident that this convention will adhere to the highest standards of democratic practice, showcasing discipline, organization, and a spirit of inclusiveness,” the minister assured.
Extensive Preparations Underway
Aminu Masari, the Chairman of the Central Coordination Committee for the convention, provided further insights into the extensive preparations. The party has dedicated three weeks to meticulous planning, involving 25 specialized subcommittees. These committees have been tasked with overseeing critical areas such as logistics, delegate accreditation, and security arrangements.
“We are thoroughly satisfied with the level of preparation achieved thus far,” Masari stated. “We can confidently assure Nigerians that the APC is fully prepared for this significant event. This convention is poised to establish a new benchmark for democratic processes within political parties in Nigeria.”
He further elaborated that the ruling party’s objective extends beyond strengthening its internal democracy. The APC aims to set an exemplary standard that other political parties across Nigeria can emulate.
The high-level briefing was attended by a distinguished assembly of government and party officials, underscoring the importance of the convention. Notable attendees included the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare; and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
