Senegal Defiant: Parading AFCON Trophy Amidst Controversial Disqualification
Senegal’s national football team is making a strong statement, defiantly parading their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy despite a controversial disqualification. In an unprecedented move, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) appeal board stripped Senegal of their title earlier this month, a decision that has been met with widespread protest and disbelief from players, fans, and the Senegalese public.
The dramatic events unfolded during the AFCON final on January 18th. Amidst tumultuous scenes, Senegalese players walked off the field in protest following a penalty awarded to their hosts. After a significant delay, the players eventually returned to the pitch, persuaded by former Liverpool forward Sadio Mané. The penalty was subsequently missed, and Senegal went on to win the match 1-0.
However, 58 days later, in a ruling that has sent shockwaves through the football world, CAF’s appeal board declared Senegal to have forfeited the final. Morocco, who had lodged an appeal, were awarded a 3-0 victory and, with it, the AFCON title. A spokesperson for CAF stated that Senegal’s actions “infringed Article 82” of their regulations.
Despite the CAF ruling, Senegal remains steadfast in their claim to the championship. Ahead of their recent international friendly match against Peru at the Stade de France, in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 70,000 fans, the Senegalese squad proudly showcased the AFCON trophy.

Players such as Edouard Mendy and Iliman Ndiaye were present as the team brought the trophy onto the field, holding it aloft for their jubilant supporters. The display served as a powerful symbol of their continued assertion of championship status.
Players Voice Disappointment and Defiance
The decision by CAF has drawn sharp criticism from prominent Senegalese players. Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, among others, has voiced his strong disapproval.
“I think this decision is just ridiculous,” Gueye stated. “We won the game on the pitch, not in offices, and as a Senegalese player, I’m just proud of what we did. We deserve this trophy. We fought on the pitch, and everyone knows what happened. I think if you play this game 10 times, we would win it 10 times.”
This sentiment highlights the players’ belief that the outcome should be decided by performance on the field, not by administrative rulings made long after the match has concluded.
The Path to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
Senegal has not accepted CAF’s verdict and has lodged its own appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS has indicated that it will expedite its decision-making process to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible, while ensuring a fair hearing for all parties involved.
Matthieu Reeb, Director General of CAS, acknowledged the eagerness of teams and fans for a final resolution. “We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing,” he commented.
A Match Marred by Controversy
The original match itself was a dramatic affair. In the 98th minute of the final in Rabat, Senegal’s players made the controversial decision to leave the field. This protest was initially triggered by an earlier goal and the subsequent awarding of the penalty. The ensuing chaos saw Senegal’s supporters attempting to enter the pitch, leading to a prolonged stoppage of approximately 17 minutes.

It was only after extensive persuasion by Sadio Mané that the Senegalese team returned to the field to complete the match.

The penalty, taken by Real Madrid’s Brahim Díaz, was ultimately saved by former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The game then proceeded to extra time, where Senegal secured their victory with a goal from Pape Gueye. This goal, at the time, was believed to have secured their second AFCON title in five years.

However, Morocco’s appeal has led to this unprecedented intervention by CAF, casting a long shadow over the tournament and raising serious questions about the integrity and fairness of the appeal process. The ongoing appeal to CAS represents the final hope for Senegal to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs – the AFCON trophy. The footballing world now waits with bated breath for CAS’s verdict, which will determine the ultimate fate of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title.
