Ningaloo’s Marine Tragedy: Cyclone Narelle’s Devastating Beach Impact

Exmouth Reels from Cyclone Narelle’s Fury: A Community Faces Massive Cleanup

The picturesque tourist town of Exmouth, nestled on Western Australia’s stunning Ningaloo coastline, is grappling with the aftermath of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle, a ferocious weather system that has left a trail of devastation in its wake. The Category 3 cyclone made landfall at Coral Bay on Friday afternoon, unleashing a torrent of rain and gale-force winds, marking one of the most severe weather events to impact the region in decades.

Residents are now facing a monumental cleanup effort as they assess the widespread damage. Exmouth was effectively cut off, with roads rendered impassable in all directions due to an astonishing 350 millimetres of rain that fell from Friday evening. Compounding the chaos, wind gusts reached terrifying speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour, tearing roofs from homes, uprooting trees, and flooding properties. The local airport also sustained significant damage, leading to flight cancellations.

The cyclone’s destructive power was also felt by those who rely on the sea for their livelihood and the natural environment that draws visitors from across the globe. Numerous boats were capsized and damaged, including trawlers that were mere weeks away from commencing the lucrative prawn season.

Devastating Scenes Emerge Along Ningaloo Coastline

Beyond the structural damage, the ecological impact has been profoundly distressing. Local conservation groups have issued urgent appeals to the community to be vigilant for injured wildlife, having witnessed “devastating scenes” along the Ningaloo coastline in the storm’s wake.

Balu Blue, a local conservation organisation, shared harrowing footage on Instagram, documenting “countless seabirds… many turtle hatchlings, fish, sea snakes, eels, crustaceans and so much more” washed ashore. They described the Nyinggulu coastline as “severely impacted,” with their observations on the west side of the cape revealing the cyclone’s brutal effect on their precious natural environment.

“Some species washed in you don’t see much while out in the water,” Balu Blue lamented, their hearts aching for the “beautiful reef and our wildlife.” The group reported assisting some creatures back into the sea and taking in numerous injured animals for care.

Infrastructure Damaged, Power and Water Outages Persist

The State Emergency Service (SES) received a significant number of calls for assistance across the region, with the majority originating from Exmouth. The cyclone’s onslaught left many residents without power for extended periods. By Sunday morning, while regional provider Horizon Power had managed to restore electricity to 250 customers in Exmouth, many were still in darkness.

Similarly, most residents in Carnarvon had their power reconnected, with only 44 homes remaining without service. Horizon Power has deployed additional crews to support local teams in restoring power to all affected properties as soon as it is safe to do so. However, they cautioned that due to the extensive damage, restoration times remain uncertain, and some areas may experience prolonged outages. The outage map has been temporarily removed from their website due to this uncertainty.

Relief Efforts Underway as Government Pledges Support

Exmouth Shire President Matthew Niikkula confirmed the town had suffered “extensive damage,” with a concerning number of residents also facing disruptions to their running water supply. Despite the widespread destruction, he was able to report that thankfully, no injuries were sustained as a direct result of the storm.

Premier Roger Cook has assured the affected communities of unwavering support, stating, “we’ve got your back, and help is coming.” He announced plans to visit the Gascoyne region on Monday to personally meet with those impacted.

To alleviate immediate hardship, relief payments ranging from $1000 to $4000 will be made available to assist with accommodation, essential food purchases, and emergency transport. The Premier noted that the worst of the weather system appeared to have passed, with heavy rainfall and damaging winds no longer expected in the state’s south, allowing resources to be redirected to the north to aid in the recovery efforts.

Quantifying the Damage: Structures, Properties, and Crops

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but initial reports paint a stark picture. In Exmouth, four structures have been completely destroyed, with seven others sustaining severe damage, 12 experiencing moderate damage, and eight reporting minor damage. These figures are anticipated to rise as further assessments are conducted throughout Sunday.

Beyond residential properties, the agricultural sector has also been hit hard. Thirty pastoral properties in the region have reported extensive damage, and significant damage to crops has been observed in and around Carnarvon.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm highlighted the sheer volume of water inundating the Northwest Cape and extending as far south as Carnarvon. He urged the public to exercise patience regarding road conditions, as it will take considerable time for the floodwaters to recede, with many roads submerged.
