A devastating lightning strike has left a pregnant mother facing a hefty repair bill of £20,000 after a powerful bolt tore a gaping 10-foot hole through her family home. Tara Craven, who is just four weeks away from giving birth, described the terrifying ordeal as a “bomb-like” explosion that ripped through her three-bedroom house in Gristhorpe, a village near Filey in North Yorkshire. The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 25, at approximately 8 pm.
At the time of the strike, Mrs. Craven, 28, was in the kitchen washing dishes, while her husband Joseph, 32, was bathing their two young sons, aged two and three. Suddenly, the house violently shook, and the lights went out. The family, accompanied by their dog, immediately evacuated the property, only to discover the catastrophic extent of the lightning strike.
“We had no idea what had happened – other than it came as a huge shock, it was terrifying,” Mrs. Craven recounted, her voice still shaken by the memory. Emerging from the house, they were met with the cacophony of car alarms blaring throughout the neighbourhood. The air was thick with dust and a pungent, electrical burning smell, a grim testament to the force of nature’s fury.
Emergency services, including firefighters from Scarborough and Filey, were quickly on the scene. Their initial response was to a report of a telegraph pole struck by lightning, which had caused a significant power surge affecting multiple properties in the Gristhorpe area. This surge resulted in electrical sockets blowing and a widespread loss of power. Fire crews conducted thorough checks on homes for any signs of fire and provided essential advice to affected residents. The incident was ultimately handed over to electricity board engineers.
However, the lightning’s impact on the Craven family’s home was far more severe. The strike had ripped off the chimney and a substantial portion of the roof. Interior damage was equally extensive. Photographs of the house revealed destroyed walls, caved-in ceilings, and a shattered conservatory roof. The family’s television was also obliterated by the strike, filling their living room with dust and debris.
With their electricity supply deemed unsafe, the family was forced to seek temporary accommodation. They were relocated to a Travelodge in Scarborough, a stark contrast to the comfort of their own home.
The sheer power of the lightning strike was evident when the family surveyed the damage to their garden the following day. Bricks were found scattered up to 30 feet away from the house, a chilling reminder of the concussive force involved. The damage wasn’t confined to their property; bricks also landed on and damaged their next-door neighbour’s house, and another brick struck the roof of a neighbour’s car.
The Craven family has yet to receive a definitive timeline for when they will be able to return to their home. “At least no one was hurt or worse, so we have to count our blessings,” Mrs. Craven stated, a sentiment of gratitude amidst the devastation. However, the uncertainty surrounding their return home remains a significant source of frustration.
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, more than £2,000 has been raised through an online fundraiser to help the family cope with the immediate aftermath and the substantial repair costs. This outpouring of support highlights the resilience and solidarity within the Gristhorpe community.
The lightning incident that struck the Craven home was part of a wider storm that impacted the North Yorkshire region. The North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that their crews responded to multiple incidents related to the storm, including the telegraph pole strike that caused power outages. Their efforts focused on ensuring the safety of residents and mitigating any immediate fire risks.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of nature and the importance of robust home insurance and community support networks. While the physical damage can be repaired, the emotional toll on the Craven family, especially with a new baby on the way, is immeasurable. The hope now is for a swift resolution to their housing situation and a return to normalcy as soon as possible.
