SRH’s Explosive Batting Prowess Undermined by Bowling Woes
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has carved out a formidable reputation in recent years for its sheer batting firepower, consistently posting scores that leave opponents reeling. The team has achieved the remarkable feat of scoring 200+ runs in a match more frequently than any other franchise over the past few seasons. This explosive batting ability, however, is increasingly becoming a double-edged sword, as their struggles to defend these formidable totals are becoming a critical concern.
The opening fixture of IPL 2026 starkly illustrated this recurring pattern. Despite amassing a commanding 202 runs, SRH found themselves unable to contain Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who chased down the target with an astonishing 15.4 overs to spare.
The RCB chase was spearheaded by blistering performances from Devdutt Padikkal, who smashed 61 runs off just 26 balls, and Virat Kohli, who contributed a rapid 69 from 38 deliveries. While SRH’s own batting efforts, including a rapid 80 from Ishan Kishan (38 balls) and a quickfire 43 from Aniket Verma (16 balls), were impressive in isolation, they ultimately proved insufficient in the face of their bowling department’s shortcomings.
This inability to protect substantial scores is not an isolated incident. Since this pattern first emerged in 2025, SRH has now lost five matches when defending targets exceeding 150 runs. This highlights a persistent issue that requires urgent attention.
The Pat Cummins Conundrum and the Bowling Unit’s Struggles
The absence of their regular captain, Pat Cummins, has significantly impacted the effectiveness of SRH’s bowling unit in the early stages of the season. In the recent match, Nitish Kumar Reddy was tasked with opening the bowling, but his spell of two overs yielded 19 runs without success. Jaydev Unadkat managed to pick up one wicket for 29 runs in his three overs, while David Payne and Harsh Dubey both conceded 35 runs each during their respective three-over spells.
The return of Pat Cummins is eagerly anticipated as a potential stabilising force for the team. His extensive international experience and proven leadership qualities are crucial for marshalling the bowling attack. Cummins has a stellar record in franchise cricket, having taken 34 wickets in 30 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 9.18 and a strike rate of 19.52.
His ability to contain runs during the crucial death overs is a particular asset. Across his franchise career, he has claimed 21 wickets in 51 death-over spells, with an economy rate of 10.94 during these critical periods. While Jaydev Unadkat has shown flashes of his potential, with a respectable bowling average of 11.47, his slower balls have become predictable, limiting their effectiveness.
New Additions and Persistent Challenges
The inclusion of Shivam Mavi, who last featured in the IPL in 2022, marks a new addition to the SRH squad. While Unadkat brings valuable experience, his reliance on predictable bowling patterns, particularly his slower balls, has proven to be a weakness. Harshal Patel, once a formidable force in the IPL, appears to be showing signs of a decline in his current form.
The team’s predicament is further complicated by the fact that they are unable to alter decisions made during the player auction. This means they must work with the bowlers they have, relying on them to improve and adapt. The immediate future for SRH’s bowling attack hinges on the return of Pat Cummins, who is expected to provide much-needed stability and guidance to the unit. Until then, the franchise faces the daunting task of finding a way to bridge the gap between their exceptional batting and their faltering bowling, a challenge that could define their IPL 2026 campaign.
