Aussie Footy’s Young Star Lost at 22: ‘Amazing Brother, Son, Uncle, Friend’

The Australian rugby league community is reeling from the devastating loss of rising star Noah Johannssen, who tragically passed away at the age of just 22. The talented young player, who was a prominent figure for both the North Sydney Bears and the Western Suburbs Magpies, left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

Johannssen had recently joined the North Sydney Bears’ NSW Cup squad – a crucial stepping stone to the elite NRL competition – a mere five months prior to his passing. Before his time with the Bears, he was a valued member of the Wests Magpies team, showcasing his skill and dedication on the field.

His brother, Tim Johannssen, who also shared a passion for the sport with Noah, paid a deeply emotional tribute to his sibling. In a heartfelt post shared on Saturday night, Tim expressed the profound grief and love he held for Noah.

“My fen brother, my forever love,” Tim wrote, his words echoing the deep bond they shared. “I’ll always be attached to you bro and I’ll always be so glad for your existence and what you did for me bro. The man you made me be and everything I have today is because you were there for me.” He continued, his voice thick with emotion, “So fen broken but I know I’ll see you again on the other side and you’ll always be with me in spirit, till next time my little buddy.”

The North Sydney Bears club issued a statement on Sunday, celebrating Johannssen’s character and the positive impact he had during his short tenure.

“Noah had been with our NSW Cup team for just five months but quickly made a lasting impression through his vibrant nature, dedication, and the respect he showed to everyone around him,” the statement read. The club emphasised the widespread grief felt across their organisation: “His loss is felt deeply across our playing group, staff, and wider Bears community.”

Gareth Holmes, the CEO of North Sydney, shared his personal sentiments, describing Noah as “a young man of great character.” He added, “This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

The Western Suburbs Magpies also released a statement expressing their sorrow at the passing of their former player.

” @westernsuburbsmagpies is saddened to learn of the passing of our former @knockoneffectcup player Noah Johannssen aged 22,” the club stated. They confirmed Noah’s playing history with the Magpies: “Noah played 9 games for the Magpies in 2025. He moved across to @northsydneybearsofficial for season 2026.” The Magpies extended their deepest sympathies: “Our thoughts are with the Johannssen Family at this time including his RL [rugby league] brother Tim.”

In the wake of this tragic news, a GoFundMe page was established to provide financial support to the Johannssen family during this incredibly difficult period. At the time of this report, the fundraising effort had already surpassed an impressive $30,000, demonstrating the widespread support and affection for Noah and his family.

Otis, a close family friend and the organiser of the GoFundMe, shared moving words about Noah.

“Noah was an amazing brother, son, uncle, and friend, an incredible football player, and someone who truly lit up every room he walked into,” Otis wrote on the fundraising page. He further elaborated on Noah’s exceptional qualities: “He was known for his kindness, his energy, and the way he could make anyone feel welcome.” The profound impact Noah had on those around him was evident in Otis’s description: “He was deeply loved by his family and everyone who knew him, and his presence will be missed more than words can describe.” Understanding the immense financial strain such a sudden loss can place on a family, Otis expressed his motivation for setting up the fundraiser: “This sudden loss has been incredibly difficult, and I want to do anything I can to help ease the burden on his family during this time.”

The tragic passing of Noah Johannssen serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact young individuals can have. His memory will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives he touched, both on and off the football field.
