UN Envoy Urges De-escalation in Sudan Amidst Peace Talks
Port Sudan, March 25, 2026 – The United Nations Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, has issued a strong call for a reduction in escalating tensions, emphasizing that de-escalation is a crucial prerequisite for achieving a cessation of hostilities. This plea comes in the wake of a significant meeting held with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sovereign Council and chief of the Sudanese army.
Haavisto, who commenced his tenure in February succeeding Ramtane Lamamra, made his inaugural visit to Port Sudan on Monday. The discussions held during this visit were described by the Sovereign Council as addressing the complex and volatile current situation within the country. A key focus was placed on concerted efforts aimed at bolstering security and stability, with the overarching objective of forging a path towards comprehensive and enduring peace.
The UN envoy underscored the paramount importance of open dialogue and a deliberate de-escalation of the current conflict. According to a statement released by the Sovereign Council, Haavisto articulated that these are not merely desirable outcomes but essential foundational steps required to pave the way for a complete and lasting halt to the ongoing hostilities.
Commitment to Peace and Sudanese Unity
During his engagements, Pekka Haavisto unequivocally reaffirmed the United Nations’ unwavering commitment to supporting all endeavors aimed at securing a ceasefire. Furthermore, he expressed a deep-seated dedication to the pursuit of a peaceful, lasting, and sustainable resolution to the protracted conflict that has gripped Sudan.
Haavisto also took the opportunity to reiterate the steadfast commitment of both the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to upholding the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan. This message serves to reinforce the international community’s stance against any actions that could undermine the sovereignty of the nation.
He further elaborated on the international body’s dedication to collaborating closely with a diverse array of global partners. The objective of this collaboration is to support and facilitate serious, tangible steps that will bring an end to the fighting. Moreover, the UN aims to help chart a clear course towards lasting peace, a vision that hinges on the principle of inclusive dialogue involving all relevant stakeholders.
Multilateral Approach to Crisis Containment
The United Nations is actively engaged in a robust five-party mechanism designed to effectively contain the ongoing crisis in Sudan. This crucial initiative involves close collaboration with several key international and regional organizations, including:
- The African Union (AU)
- The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)
- The Arab League
- The European Union (EU)
This multilateral framework serves as a vital platform for coordinating efforts, bridging the significant gaps that exist between various political forces within Sudan. The ultimate aim is to create a conducive environment for an inclusive process that will determine the country’s future governance. The envoy’s visit and the subsequent pronouncements highlight the international community’s persistent efforts to navigate the complex Sudanese landscape and foster a pathway towards stability and reconciliation.
