Tinubu’s Green Drive: CNG Expands to EVs

Nigeria Broadens Clean Mobility Push to Encompass Electric Vehicles

President Bola Tinubu has given the green light to a significant expansion of Nigeria’s Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), officially broadening its scope to include electric vehicles (EVs). This strategic enhancement sees the initiative rebranded as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), underscoring a more comprehensive approach to the nation’s clean mobility strategy.

The expanded mandate positions PiCNG & EV as the central coordinating body for Nigeria’s clean mobility efforts, encompassing both gas-powered and electric vehicles across the entire country. This move signifies a commitment to diversifying energy sources for transportation and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Key Objectives and Scope of the Expanded Initiative:

  • Continued CNG Infrastructure Development: The initiative will maintain its focus on deploying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure. This includes the establishment of “Mother and Daughter” stations, integrated refuelling units, and the provision of CNG vehicles and equipment. Nationwide conversion programmes to transition existing vehicles to CNG will also continue to be a priority.
  • Anchoring Electric Vehicle Rollout: A core new function of PiCNG & EV will be to spearhead the development and implementation of electric vehicle (EV) ecosystems. This involves the rollout of EV charging infrastructure and attracting related investments across Nigeria.
  • Affordable Vehicle Conversions: President Tinubu has issued a directive for the immediate establishment of a coordinated process to rapidly deploy vehicle conversion kits nationwide. A critical aspect of this directive is ensuring these kits are made accessible to Nigerians at a cost that is not financially burdensome.
  • Facilitating Financial Access: To achieve widespread accessibility for vehicle conversions, PiCNG & EV will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, other financial institutions, and relevant partners. The objective is to design cost-effective financing structures that make the transition to cleaner fuels attainable for the general public.
  • Accelerated Mobile Refuelling: The President has also called for the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units. This measure aims to enhance access to CNG while permanent infrastructure continues to be scaled up, ensuring broader availability of the alternative fuel.

The statement highlighted that natural gas remains a competitive and strategic fuel for transportation in Nigeria. By leveraging the nation’s abundant natural gas reserves, estimated at over 200 trillion cubic feet, the government aims to lower transportation costs, bolster energy security, and conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves. The inclusion of electric vehicles further strengthens the administration’s agenda for promoting mobility that is not only affordable and efficient but also environmentally responsible.

The original Presidential CNG Initiative was launched in 2023 as a key component of the Federal Government’s strategy to mitigate the economic and social impacts of the petrol subsidy removal. A primary goal of the initiative has been to encourage the adoption of cleaner energy alternatives for transportation. Prior to the expansion, the initiative had set ambitious targets, including the conversion of one million vehicles to run on compressed natural gas and the establishment of numerous CNG conversion and refuelling stations nationwide.

The integration of electric vehicles into this presidential initiative signals a forward-looking approach to energy transition in Nigeria. It acknowledges the global shift towards electric mobility and positions the country to harness the benefits of both CNG and EV technologies. This dual-pronged strategy is expected to foster a more sustainable and resilient transportation sector, contributing to economic growth and environmental protection. The success of PiCNG & EV will be crucial in shaping Nigeria’s energy future and achieving its clean mobility goals.
