A substantial quantity of diesel fuel, estimated to be several hundred litres, has been pilfered from a rural property near Oatlands in central Tasmania. The audacious overnight heist occurred between 5pm yesterday and 6:30am this morning, leaving property owners reeling from the significant loss.
The stolen fuel was being stored in a tank mounted on a trailer, parked at the property. While the precise volume of diesel taken remains under investigation, it’s understood that the 1,000-litre tank was largely full prior to the incident. This theft represents a considerable financial blow, especially given the current high prices of fuel.
The average price for a litre of diesel in Tasmania has surged, currently sitting at approximately $3.04. This is a dramatic increase from the beginning of March, when prices hovered around $1.86 per litre. If the stolen tank held an estimated 800 litres of diesel, the value of the stolen fuel would exceed $2,400 at current market rates.
Tasmania Police have issued a stern warning to property and vehicle owners across the state, urging them to remain “vigilant to potential fuel theft.” The force is advising individuals to take proactive steps to safeguard their valuable fuel reserves and machinery.
Key recommendations from the police include:
Detectives are currently investigating the incident and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist their enquiries. The nature of the theft suggests a degree of planning and potentially specialised equipment to siphon such a large volume of fuel.
Authorities are exploring all avenues, including potential links to other recent fuel thefts in the region, though no official connections have been confirmed at this stage. The remoteness of many Tasmanian properties can make them attractive targets for criminals, highlighting the importance of robust security measures.
Police are particularly interested in any sightings of suspicious vehicles or individuals in the vicinity of the Oatlands property between the hours of 5pm yesterday and 6:30am today. Information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, could be crucial in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Anyone with information is strongly encouraged to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania anonymously via their website or by calling 1800 333 000. The force is committed to tackling rural crime and ensuring the safety and security of all Tasmanians.
