PNG Chiefs Poised to Appoint Premiership-Winning Coach Willie Peters
The burgeoning National Rugby League (NRL) franchise, the PNG Chiefs, appears to be on the cusp of a significant appointment, with Premiership-winning coach Willie Peters strongly favoured to become their inaugural head coach. While a contract is yet to be formally signed, Peters has reportedly informed his current players at Hull KR of his intentions, signalling a strong commitment to the role.
Peters, a former halfback for the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs, has emerged as the preferred candidate, reportedly fending off competition from notable coaches such as Brad Arthur, Jason Demetriou, and Adrian Lam. This potential move marks a significant step for the PNG-based team, which is slated to enter the NRL competition in 2028.
The news follows a whirlwind 24 hours for the fledgling franchise, which has also identified its recruitment manager. Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs scout Liam Ayoub has been chosen for the crucial role. Ayoub brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a player manager and as part of the Bulldogs’ strategic team, working alongside coach Cameron Ciraldo and general manager of football Phil Gould in roster assembly.
The Chiefs’ strategy was to secure a coach before finalising their recruitment manager, and Peters’ preference for Ayoub played a pivotal role in the latter’s selection. Although contract negotiations are ongoing, the parties involved are reportedly confident enough in the discussions for Ayoub to have already tendered his resignation from the Bulldogs.
Willie Peters has garnered considerable attention in the coaching ranks, widely regarded as a coach destined for the NRL. His tenure at Hull KR in the Super League has been nothing short of spectacular. He has guided the English club to the last two Super League Grand Finals, culminating in a triumphant victory in the 2025 decider against Wigan. Beyond his club success, the 47-year-old has further bolstered his coaching credentials through his role as an assistant coach for the Australian Kangaroos and a commanding World Club Challenge win against Michael Maguire’s Brisbane Broncos in February.
The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has reportedly identified Peters as their top choice for the PNG Chiefs position. According to ARLC chair Peter V’landys, only an unexpected breakdown in contract negotiations would prevent Peters from taking the helm.
“It was a very rigorous process; we would have been very happy with any of the other candidates who interviewed brilliantly,” V’landys stated. “Any of them would have done a good job, but Willie was the one who really impressed the sub-committee. I was so impressed with Willie when I met him as the assistant coach to the Australian Kangaroos.”
V’landys elaborated on Peters’ suitability for the role, highlighting his personal and professional attributes. “He’s very personable, very professional, and very focused. I was impressed from the moment I met him. His record speaks for itself. He’s won the Super League, he beat the Broncos, was assistant coach of the Australian team that won 3-0 against England. He is the up-and-coming coach who will add significant value to PNG. He deserves his chance in the big time.”
A key aspect of the PNG Chiefs’ vision is their integration into the rugby league-passionate nation of Papua New Guinea. V’landys believes Peters is exceptionally well-equipped to foster this connection and promote the sport within the country.
“That is one of his strengths, how personable he is,” V’landys continued. “That’s a characteristic you need for this job in PNG; you need to be able to deal with people respectfully, and he will do that.”
With the impending appointments of Willie Peters as head coach and Michael Chammas as general manager of football, the PNG Chiefs are now strategically positioned to enter the player market. This dual appointment signals the franchise’s readiness to begin the crucial task of assembling their inaugural roster and laying the foundation for their highly anticipated debut in the NRL. The club is expected to make further announcements regarding player recruitment in the coming months as they gear up for their 2028 entry.
The selection of Peters, a coach with a proven track record of success at the highest level of club and international rugby league, is a strong indication of the PNG Chiefs’ ambition. His experience in developing winning teams and his ability to connect with players and stakeholders will be invaluable as the franchise navigates the complexities of establishing itself in one of the world’s most competitive sporting leagues. The partnership with Liam Ayoub in recruitment further strengthens the club’s capacity to identify and secure talent that will form the backbone of their future success.
The journey for the PNG Chiefs is just beginning, but with these key leadership appointments, they are taking significant strides towards becoming a competitive force in the NRL. The coming years will undoubtedly be a period of intense development and strategic planning as the club works towards its 2028 debut.
