A distressing case has emerged involving a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, who has been ordered to remain in custody for 60 days pending further investigation. The nurse stands accused of involvement in an unlawful abortion that allegedly resulted in the death of Victoria Ariyo, a 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.
The legal proceedings commenced with Adesanya’s arraignment at the Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta. The charges brought against her are multifaceted, encompassing conspiracy, the illicit supply of drugs for the purpose of abortion, and ultimately, murder.
According to the prosecution, the alleged criminal activities transpired between January and March of 2026 within the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. The police counsel, Solomon Babalola, informed the court that the drugs purportedly provided by Adesanya were instrumental in the tragic demise of Victoria Ariyo.
The formal charge sheet outlines the gravity of the accusations:
COUNT I: Conspiracy to Commit Felony (Abortion)
This charge alleges that Kehinde Adesanya, along with other individuals not yet identified, conspired between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta, to commit the felony of abortion. This offense is contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.
COUNT II: Unlawfully Attempting to Procure Abortion
The second count states that Kehinde Adesanya, on the same dates and at the same location, unlawfully attempted to procure an abortion by supplying Ariyo Victoria Olapeju with drugs. This action is cited as an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 230 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.
COUNT III: Conspiracy to Commit Felony (Murder)
This charge posits that Kehinde Adesanya and others at large conspired between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta, to commit the felony of murder. Such an act is contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.
COUNT IV: Unlawful Killing (Murder)
The most severe charge alleges that Kehinde Adesanya, along with accomplices, unlawfully killed Ariyo Victoria Olapeju, a 23-year-old, by administering drugs for abortion. This is an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.
Presiding over the case was Magistrate O. Sam-Obaleye. The prosecution formally requested an order to remand the defendant for an initial period of 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre. This remand is crucial pending the receipt of legal advice from the state’s Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). The prosecution emphasized that these alleged offenses contravene various sections of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, specifically Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319.
Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Sam-Obaleye acceded to the prosecution’s plea, ordering that Kehinde Adesanya be held at the Ibara Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned to May 26, 2026, for further proceedings.
The police investigation has also revealed that Victoria Ariyo was reportedly in a romantic relationship with Abass Olalekan, identified as the NYSC Inspector for Abeokuta South Local Government. This relationship is understood to have led to Ariyo’s pregnancy and the subsequent alleged abortion.
Abass Olalekan has also been brought before the court. He was arraigned earlier on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempting to procure an abortion. Olalekan entered a plea of not guilty and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N500,000.
This unfolding legal saga highlights the serious consequences of illegal and unsafe abortion practices, emphasizing the legal ramifications for those involved and the tragic loss of young lives. The ongoing legal process will aim to uncover the full extent of the events and ensure justice is served.
