Intensified Military Operations Neutralise Terrorists, Recover Arms Across Northwest Nigeria

Troops operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have significantly escalated their coordinated offensives across Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states, achieving notable successes in their campaign against violent extremist groups. In a series of operations conducted on March 25, security forces neutralised at least six suspected terrorists and seized a substantial cache of weapons and essential equipment.

The Nigerian Army has reiterated that these intensified operations are strategically designed to dismantle terrorist strongholds and bolster the safety and security of communities throughout the North-West region of the country.

Sokoto State: Forest Encounters Yield Significant Gains

In Sokoto State, troops attached to the COAS Intervention Battalion VII engaged terrorist elements in two distinct encounters within the Magonho Forest. These engagements resulted in the elimination of three bandits and the successful recovery of three AK-47 rifles and multiple motorcycles. The swift action by the troops disrupted terrorist activities and removed critical assets from their operational reach.

Zamfara State: Ambush and Repelled Attacks Underscore Vigilance

Zamfara State witnessed a successful ambush executed by troops along the Gada Maya–Makakari road. This operation led to the neutralisation of two terrorists and the dispersal of other fleeing combatants. The recovered items from this operation included a valuable AK-47 rifle, three magazines, a significant quantity of 7.62mm ammunition (55 rounds), a Baofeng communication radio crucial for coordination, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle.

On the same day, troops demonstrated their readiness by repelling a retaliatory attack on Kaida Village. The assailants, reportedly motivated by accusations that residents were collaborating with security forces, were met with a decisive response. This confrontation resulted in the neutralisation of an additional terrorist and the recovery of another AK-47 rifle, showcasing the troops’ ability to respond effectively to threats and protect civilian populations.

Furthermore, in a separate intelligence-driven operation conducted in Dutsi Village, located within the Moriki District of Zurmi Local Government Area, troops successfully pressured terrorists into fleeing their positions. The fleeing militants abandoned an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 26 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, demonstrating the effectiveness of intelligence gathering and proactive military action.

Kebbi State: Resilience Amidst Ambush

In Kebbi State, troops responded to critical intelligence regarding the presence of the Lakurawa Terrorist Group in the Giron Masa community, within Shanga Local Government Area. The security forces encountered an ambush approximately 500 metres from the village.

Despite coming under fire, the troops exhibited remarkable steadfastness. Reinforcements and essential combat enablers were rapidly deployed to the area, allowing for sustained engagement. Follow-up operations are currently underway, focused on tracking down the fleeing assailants and ensuring their apprehension.

Military’s Commitment to Peace and Security

Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division, highlighted the significance of these operations. He stated that the recent actions underscore the military’s unwavering determination to dominate the operational environment and dismantle the networks that sustain terrorist activities in the region.

“Our troops remain resolute and focused. These operations reflect our unwavering commitment to neutralising terrorist elements and restoring peace to affected communities,” Osoba remarked.

He further added that intelligence-led efforts are actively ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the ambush in Kebbi State.

“The morale of our troops is high, and we will continue to sustain the momentum until these threats are eliminated,” he affirmed, conveying a strong message of resolve.

The assurance has been given that efforts to secure the region and bring lasting peace will be sustained without compromise.
