The MTN CHAMPS Season 4 has landed in Jos, Plateau State, igniting the athletic landscape with the Continental Relays taking centre stage at the New Jos Stadium. This highly anticipated event has already showcased remarkable performances, setting a thrilling precedent for the competitions to come.
The track finals kicked off with a bang, particularly in the women’s 400m. Esther Okon delivered a stellar performance, clocking a season-best time of 53.61 seconds to claim the first track final title. She was closely pursued by MTN’s Toheebat Jimoh, who secured the second position with a time of 53.88 seconds, while teammate Miracle Uwem Donald rounded out the podium in third place at 54.27 seconds.
The men’s 400m heats also saw impressive displays of speed and strategy. Team MTN’s Ezekiel Asuquo emerged as the frontrunner, recording the fastest time of 47.43 seconds. Mfoniso Frank followed closely with 47.66 seconds, and Pelumi Emmanuel secured the third-fastest time at 48.37 seconds.
In the Youth Girls’ 400m heats, Faustina Obi from Dynamic Kaduna stood out as the sole athlete to break the 56-second barrier. She achieved a personal best of 55.73 seconds, finishing significantly ahead of Chioma Edet of Vision High (57.09 seconds) and Oluchi Ezeh (57.19 seconds).
The men’s junior 400m heats were led by Team MTN’s Michael Aniche, who demonstrated controlled running to finish in 49.22 seconds. Aniche, a previous winner in Calabar, was followed by his teammate Prosper Ushie (49.86 seconds) and Chinedu Victor of Coach Felix Foundation (50.13 seconds).
Team MTN also showcased their depth in the Youth Girls’ 400m, with Chizoba Onyemauwa, Patience Shepnan, and Calista Yunana securing the top three fastest times. In the corresponding Boys’ division, Nuhu Bamiyan, Zikirullah Ibrahim, and Abudmalik Aliyu led the pack.
The women’s junior 100m is rapidly becoming one of the most electrifying events of the competition. Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo of NUT set the pace in the heats, achieving a wind-assisted personal best of 11.46 seconds (+2.1). Her teammate and defending champion, Miracle Ezechukwu, followed with 11.55 seconds, while MTN’s Lucy Nwankwo clocked a season-best of 11.84 seconds.
The junior men’s 100m is also dominated by MTN athletes. Emmanuel Akolo, who previously won the Youth Boys’ 100m and 200m in Calabar, currently leads the standings with 10.89 seconds. He is closely trailed by teammates Alvin Onyeama (10.90 seconds) and Abdulfatah Oduwole (10.99 seconds).
In the senior men’s 100m heats, Okechukwu Ezeh posted a personal best of 10.56 seconds to top the field. Okisamen Divine Favour and Kabiru Mohammed were not far behind, clocking 10.58 seconds and 10.62 seconds, respectively.
The Youth Girls’ 100m heats witnessed an unusual tie for first place, with Bernice Onoriode and Rebecca Enilolobo both crossing the finish line in 12.39 seconds. Bakare Rofiat and Joanna Udoh recorded the next fastest times in this category.
MTN’s Fervent Edet made a strong statement in the Youth Boys’ 100m heats, achieving a personal best of 11.13 seconds and positioning himself as a strong favourite for the final. Matthew Ngowu and Daniel Egah secured the second and third fastest times, respectively.
The younger age categories also provided compelling performances. In the Cadet Boys’ 100m, Attach Boyi led the field with a time of 13.34 seconds, ahead of Hamisu Muhammad (13.40 seconds) and Mohammed Khalid (13.46 seconds).
The Cadet Girls’ event was topped by Nantap Zachariah, who set a personal best of 14.36 seconds. Isabel Ibrahim Majida and Acelynn Alex followed with times of 14.64 seconds and 14.78 seconds, respectively, highlighting the burgeoning talent within these age groups.
The Continental Relays in Jos are proving to be a vibrant platform for athletes to showcase their skills, push their limits, and vie for supremacy.
