Mekong Fund Fuels 19 Thai Ventures

Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Funds 19 Thai Projects for Sustainable Development

Nineteen new initiatives spearheaded by five Thai government agencies have successfully secured funding from the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund (MLCSF). These projects are poised to make significant contributions to the critical areas of public health, the green economy, and agricultural modernisation within Thailand and the broader Mekong subregion.

The announcement of these successful proposals coincided with the official launch of Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Week 2026, which took place in Bangkok. The event, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy, also served as a significant milestone, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the MLC framework.

A Decade of Development and Cooperation

The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework, established in 2016 with financial backing from the Chinese government, has been instrumental in supporting a wide array of development initiatives across the six member countries: China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The fund prioritises key sectors vital for regional prosperity and stability, including agriculture, public health, environmental protection, education, and cultural exchange.

During the MLC Week launch, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jianwei highlighted the substantial impact of the MLCSF, noting its support for over 1,000 projects across the region. These projects have collectively aimed to improve livelihoods, foster regional stability, and promote sustainable economic growth.

Thailand has played a pivotal role within this framework, not only as a key beneficiary of the MLCSF but also as the co-chair for the current year’s MLC activities. Ambassador Zhang underscored Thailand’s prominence, stating that over 100 Thai projects have received support to date, amounting to a total of more than US$29 million (approximately 947 million baht).

Focus Areas for the New Projects

The 19 projects selected for this year’s funding cycle represent a diverse range of expertise and strategic priorities. The participating Thai agencies include:

  • The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation
  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives
  • The Ministry of Commerce
  • The Ministry of Industry
  • The Office of the National Water Resources

These initiatives are specifically designed to bolster sustainable development pathways and enhance both economic and environmental resilience within Thailand and the wider Mekong subregion. Ambassador Zhang expressed optimism, stating that these 19 projects, by focusing on public health, the green economy, and agricultural modernisation, will “inject new impetus into the development of Thailand and other countries in the region.”

Looking Towards “MLC 2.0”

The 10th anniversary of the MLC Leaders’ Meeting also saw Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi issuing a call to action for member countries. He urged for a strengthening of cooperation, a dedicated push towards green and innovative development, and a collective effort to build a peaceful and prosperous “MLC 2.0” for the coming decade. Minister Wang envisioned a future where the member states work together “to build a peaceful, safe, secure, and brighter MLC region.”

Chettaphan Maksamphan, the deputy permanent secretary at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, echoed the sentiment for enhanced collaboration. He confirmed that over the past decade, 112 Thai projects have benefited from the MLCSF. Acknowledging the evolving landscape of the Mekong region, which faces increasing challenges such as economic transitions and complex transnational issues, Mr. Maksamphan stressed the necessity for “even more focused and forward-looking” cooperation among member states.

Thailand, in its capacity as co-chair, has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that these MLCSF-funded projects yield tangible and practical outcomes. This dedication is particularly important as the region anticipates the upcoming leaders’ meeting later this year, where further strategic directions for the MLC are expected to be discussed and solidified. The success of these 19 projects represents a significant step forward in achieving the MLC’s overarching goals of shared prosperity and sustainable development.
