Domestic Violence Survivor Receives Support as Accused Partner Appears in Court
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed the arrest and arraignment of an individual accused of a brutal act of domestic violence, which reportedly resulted in the severing of his partner’s finger. The case gained significant public attention following a viral video shared by the survivor on TikTok, identified by her handle @anniesglowlagos.
The agency stated that upon becoming aware of the circulated video, it “promptly established contact with the survivor and ensured that the case was formally reported to the appropriate authorities.” Preliminary investigations conducted by the DSVA indicate that the alleged assault took place on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The incident was initially reported to the FESTAC Police Station Tactical Squad and is currently under the purview of the Family Support Unit at the same station.
According to the DSVA’s statement, the survivor has alleged a pattern of physical assault by her estranged partner, culminating in severe injuries, including the loss of a finger. The legal process has since moved forward, with law enforcement authorities conducting a thorough investigation and initiating prosecution.
The alleged perpetrator was apprehended, and the matter has been diligently examined by law enforcement. Subsequently, on March 25, 2026, the case was formally presented in court at Court 6, MBA Ajegunle. The accused has been remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, awaiting further legal proceedings.
The DSVA further reported that bail was granted to the accused in the sum of ₦200,000, requiring two sureties. The next court hearing has been scheduled for April 29, 2026. In parallel with the legal proceedings, the survivor has been referred for essential psychosocial support services to aid in her recovery and overall well-being.
The case first came to widespread public notice when the TikTok user, @anniesglowlagos, posted a video on March 22. In the distressing clip, she detailed her hospitalization and the treatment she was receiving following the alleged assault, issuing a plea for help. She described the severe condition of her hand, stating, “This hand as it is like this is actually cut into two… I’m actually in the hospital, I’m taking treatment.” The survivor also alluded to having more graphic evidence of the abuse but was unable to share it on the platform.
She recounted her prior attempts to seek justice, expressing frustration over the perceived lack of immediate action. “I’ve gone to the police station in my rights and nothing is actually done about it,” she stated in the video. The survivor also revealed that the abuse was not an isolated incident but had been ongoing for an extended period, even though she and the accused do not reside together. She explained, “This has actually been going on for a long time… we don’t stay together… I stay on my own while he stay on his own.” Documenting previous assaults had been challenging, as her phone was frequently confiscated during such episodes.
Detailing the most recent incident, she alleged that the accused forcibly entered her residence, subjected her to a violent attack, and inflicted the grievous injuries. Furthermore, she claimed that after the assault, the perpetrator fled with her son and continued to pose a threat to her personal safety. “Right now this guy ran away with my son… he came to my house, beat me up… I am not safe… this guy has been coming to threaten me,” she conveyed in her plea.
The survivor’s direct appeal to the public urged widespread sharing and reposting of her story, emphasizing her urgent need for help and justice. “Please guys, I need help, and I need justice for this… help me share, repost… let this thing get to the right authority,” she implored.
In response to the case and to reinforce its commitment to combating such crimes, the DSVA reiterated the Lagos State Government’s firm stance. “The Lagos State Government maintains zero tolerance for all forms of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and urges members of the public to speak up and report incidents,” the agency stated. The DSVA concluded with a powerful reminder: “Remember, if you see something, say something. SGBV – It Concerns Us All.”
