The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, has outlined a robust agenda focused on significantly curtailing cultism and other forms of violent crime, aiming to bolster security throughout Nigeria’s bustling economic capital. This commitment was articulated during his inaugural address, marking his assumption of duties as the 42nd Commissioner of the Lagos State Police Command.
Commissioner Fatai declared that the command will adopt proactive, intelligence-led strategies to effectively address the state’s security challenges. His vision is to create an environment where criminal elements have “no hiding place.”
The operational focus under Commissioner Fatai’s leadership will encompass several critical areas:
Commissioner Fatai acknowledged the unique security demands placed upon Lagos State, recognizing its pivotal role as Nigeria’s economic hub. He stated, “A secure environment is fundamental to economic growth and public confidence. We are prepared to confront these challenges head-on.”
A cornerstone of Commissioner Fatai’s strategy involves deepening community policing initiatives and fostering stronger collaborations with residents and key stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of building trust and encouraging a partnership approach where residents view the police as allies in progress.
“We will continue to build trust, deepen cooperation, and encourage residents to see the police as partners in progress,” he asserted.
Recognizing the significant demographic of young people in Lagos, the Commissioner highlighted youth engagement as a critical strategy for crime prevention. The command plans to proactively and constructively involve young individuals to foster peace and deter them from engaging in criminal activities.
“Youth engagement will remain a priority. We will constructively engage young people to foster peace and prevent crime,” he stated.
Commissioner Fatai also underscored the necessity of robust inter-agency cooperation. He affirmed that the Lagos State Police Command would work closely with the military and other security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and execute coordinated operations effectively.
Furthermore, he issued a stern warning to police officers regarding unprofessional conduct. He stressed that discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights are non-negotiable principles that will be strictly enforced.
“Discipline, professionalism, and integrity are non-negotiable. The command has zero tolerance for police brutality and all forms of misconduct,” he declared.
The Commissioner concluded by urging residents to remain law-abiding and to actively support security agencies by providing credible information. He assured both the Lagos State Government and the citizenry of his unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
