Nigeria Urges European Investors to Embrace Local Production for Sustainable Growth
The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has issued a compelling appeal to European investors, urging a fundamental shift away from extractive trade practices towards establishing local production partnerships within Nigeria. He articulated that technology transfer and robust in-country manufacturing are pivotal strategies for effectively addressing the nation’s youth unemployment crisis and mitigating the drivers of irregular migration.
Kalu’s call to action was made in Abuja during a significant courtesy visit from a delegation of European parliamentarians representing the First Step Forum, led by Marc Jost. The meeting was specifically convened to foster and strengthen bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and European nations.
At the core of Kalu’s proposition lies the adoption of the “near-shoring” economic model. This innovative approach advocates for the relocation of industrial production activities to geographical locations that are proximate to the sources of essential raw materials. Kalu posited that embracing this strategy would not only unlock significant value from Nigeria’s abundant resources but also create substantial employment opportunities and deepen the economic interdependence between Africa and Europe.
“We are blessed with a vast and vibrant youth population,” Kalu stated during the discussions. “You possess the capital and the technological expertise; we, in turn, have the raw materials. The pertinent question we must collectively address is why we are not actively implementing what economic principles define as near-shoring.”
He underscored the critical importance of prioritizing local processing of commodities over the mere export of raw materials. Using cocoa as a prime illustration, Kalu questioned the economic logic of such a model: “Why would we export raw cocoa beans only to subsequently import finished chocolate products? The logical and beneficial path is to establish factories here, in Nigeria. This is the essence of value addition, and it is precisely through such initiatives that sustainable jobs are generated.”
Kalu also drew attention to Nigeria’s substantial lithium reserves, highlighting their global competitiveness and strategic significance in the ongoing international transition towards clean energy solutions. He passionately advocated for collaborative partnerships aimed at developing domestic capabilities for the production of electric vehicle batteries, rather than continuing to export this crucial mineral in its unprocessed form.
Beyond the immediate economic imperatives, Kalu seized the opportunity to call for a comprehensive recalibration of Africa-Europe relations.
