Dog Groomer Attacked After Business Wins Top Award

A celebratory evening at the Best of Welsh Business Awards turned violent when a rival’s husband launched an unprovoked assault on a business owner, leaving him with severe injuries and significant financial losses. The incident, which occurred outside the Flint Mountain Park Hotel on June 18, 2025, saw Julian Sandy, owner of Woofterz Dog Grooming, attacked by Adrian Bolton, husband of a competitor, shortly after Woofterz was crowned the winner in the pet services category.

The awards ceremony, intended to honour excellence in Welsh businesses, became the backdrop for a shocking display of aggression. Mr. Sandy, who runs Woofterz with his partner Martin Bradley, had just received the prestigious accolade, beating out Paws n Relax, owned by Mr. Bolton’s wife, and six other businesses.

The Assault Unfolds

According to Mr. Sandy, he was alone in the hotel courtyard, still basking in the glow of his company’s hard-earned victory, when Adrian Bolton approached him. Mr. Bolton, aged 56, allegedly asked to speak with Mr. Sandy, 47. “I really didn’t think anything of it as I hardly knew the man,” Mr. Sandy recounted.

Suddenly, and without warning, Mr. Bolton allegedly began to assault Mr. Sandy. “Out of nowhere, he was hitting me in the head and kicking me and twisting my thumb and not letting go,” Mr. Sandy described. The shock and sudden pain left him unable to defend himself. “I just couldn’t believe what was happening as it came from nowhere,” he added.

Security personnel intervened, allowing Mr. Sandy to retreat to the safety of his hotel room. However, the physical and emotional toll of the attack was just beginning to manifest.

Devastating Consequences for Mr. Sandy

The injuries sustained by Mr. Sandy have had a profound and lasting impact on his life and livelihood. He reported a snapped joint and a chipped bone in his thumb, which rendered him incapable of performing his job for a staggering 12 weeks. This incapacitation forced him to redirect clients to rival groomers, a situation he described as deeply frustrating.

The financial repercussions have been severe. Mr. Sandy estimates he lost approximately £18,000 due to the inability to work. This included:

• £6,000 that was earmarked for salon improvements, which had to be diverted to cover essential living expenses and bills.
• A further £12,000 in lost earnings.

“Customers would call me for an appointment and since I only had one good hand, I would have to explain I would not be able to do it for a couple of months, due to my injury,” Mr. Sandy explained. He also faced the difficult situation of not being able to disclose the true reason for his absence due to the pending court case. This led to some clients opting to go to Paws n Relax, which they saw as the closest alternative salon.

Long-Term Health and Psychological Trauma

Beyond the immediate financial strain, Mr. Sandy is grappling with ongoing pain and the potential for a permanent career-ending injury. He reported suffering severe pain in his injured thumb on a daily basis, necessitating constant pain relief. His doctor has also prescribed antidepressants to help him cope with the mental trauma.

A victim impact statement submitted to the court detailed the extent of his suffering: “To date, I am still suffering daily from severe pain in the thumb that was injured in the attack and I have to take pain relief on a constant basis. I have also been prescribed antidepressants by my doctor. […] I understand the legal process should be over soon but I will still be suffering and will have to live everyday with the effects of physical pain and mental trauma for an unforeseeable amount of time.”

In addition to the thumb injury, Mr. Sandy experienced bruising to his jaw, which made eating difficult for weeks, and bruising in his kidney area. The most concerning aspect is the long-term prognosis for his hand. The break caused his bone to fuse to the tendon, a complication that could necessitate future surgery and potentially force him to abandon his passion for dog grooming.

“At the last appointment, the orthopaedic consultant told me I could carry on working for now but at some point, I may need surgery and to rest it and it could be that with long term prognosis it that the pain will never really go away and I will have to give up Woofterz and dog grooming, something I really love,” Mr. Sandy stated.

He expressed his dismay at the stark contrast between his ongoing struggles and the apparent carefree lifestyle of his competitor’s family. “I have had months of pain and loss and financial worry whilst his wife’s salon has been posting on social media about their wonderful holiday in Dubai. It just feels so unfair.”

Legal Resolution and Sentencing

Adrian Bolton pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. At Mold Magistrates Court on February 27, he was sentenced to 160 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay Mr. Sandy £2,000 in compensation. While this legal resolution marks an end to the court proceedings, the physical, emotional, and financial wounds inflicted upon Julian Sandy continue to heal, with uncertainty lingering over his future in the profession he cherishes.
