Ekiti-NAF Alliance: Elevating Airport Growth & Security

Ekiti State Bolsters Security and Economic Potential Through Enhanced Nigerian Air Force Partnership

Ekiti State is significantly ramping up its collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to bolster the operational efficiency and security of the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport. This strategic alliance also aims to fortify security measures across the entire state, underscoring a commitment to economic development and public safety.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji articulated the critical importance of this deepened partnership, emphasizing that Ekiti is home to a state-of-the-art airport. He stressed that close cooperation with the NAF is indispensable for safeguarding this vital facility, ensuring seamless flight operations, and ultimately maximizing its economic potential for the benefit of Ekiti State.

The Governor’s remarks were made during a productive working visit to the office of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. This engagement highlighted the government’s proactive stance in fostering robust inter-agency relationships.

Governor Oyebanji expressed profound appreciation for the NAF’s unwavering professionalism and dedication. He acknowledged that the Air Force’s sustained efforts have been instrumental in protecting lives, securing critical infrastructure, and facilitating smooth operations at the Ekiti airport.

“We have engaged in extensive discussions with the NAF regarding how we can further strengthen our partnership,” Governor Oyebanji stated. “We are deeply grateful for the deployment of your personnel to defend and protect our state. However, we believe there is scope for even greater collaboration.”

To concretize this commitment, the state government has allocated over 1,000 hectares of land to the Air Force, with the Certificate of Occupancy now prepared. Governor Oyebanji personally attended the meeting to underscore his administration’s unwavering dedication to this crucial collaboration.

He further elaborated on the airport’s capabilities: “Ekiti boasts one of the most modern airports in the country, a fact consistently attested to by the pilots who have utilized its facilities. The superior quality of our runway, coupled with our comprehensive ground infrastructure and the upcoming readiness of our Instrument Landing System (ILS) next month, makes it imperative to deepen our collaboration with the NAF.”

The Governor pledged the state’s readiness to provide any necessary assets that will empower the Air Force to operate effectively on the ground. This, he believes, will significantly enhance the security of the populace, instill greater confidence, and render the airport considerably more functional.

In his address, Air Marshal Aneke commended Governor Oyebanji for his forward-thinking approach to development and security within Ekiti State. He remarked that the Governor’s commitment “is a clear reflection of visionary leadership and a profound understanding of the pivotal roles that security and robust infrastructure play in driving economic growth.”

Air Marshal Aneke affirmed the NAF’s strong desire to deepen its collaborative ties with the state government. This partnership, he explained, extends beyond the immediate mandate of securing the airport and other critical infrastructure. It also encompasses supporting initiatives that are designed to foster economic advancement, stimulate regional development, and ensure the overall safety and well-being of both residents and visitors.

A significant development hinted at by Air Marshal Aneke involves ongoing discussions with international partners. These discussions are focused on the potential establishment of an aircraft repair and overhaul centre at the Ekiti airport. This ambitious plan is envisioned as a strategic move that will not only augment the airport’s operational capacity but also generate employment opportunities and strengthen the state’s aviation and security frameworks.

Air Marshal Aneke lauded Governor Oyebanji’s strategic acumen, stating, “Your developmental strides are truly commendable. Such achievements are only possible through a strategic mindset, and future generations will undoubtedly recognize and appreciate your invaluable contributions to the state.”

The high-level meeting was attended by several key figures, including:
* AVM Adeniyi Ojuawo (retd), representing Ekiti South Federal Constituency I.
* Mr. Akintunde Oyebode, the Commissioner for Finance.
* AVM Sunday Makinde (retd), Technical Adviser on the Airport Project.
