Police Launch Investigation into Alleged Assault on International Artist

Accra, Ghana – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered a thorough investigation into an alleged assault on Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, a prominent international artist based in Tamale. The incident, which reportedly involved personnel from the Black Maria Unit of the Ghana Police Service, has prompted swift action from the highest echelons of the police administration.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director-General of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed the directive following a closed-door meeting with Mr. Mahama, his family, and the Police Management Board (POMAB). She stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been tasked with spearheading the inquiry.

Furthermore, the matter has been referred to the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Unit. This move aims to expedite the investigation process and ensure all aspects of the alleged assault are meticulously examined.

DCOP Ansah-Akrofi assured the public and Mr. Mahama of the Police Service’s full cooperation throughout the investigation. She reiterated the commitment to upholding the law, stating that “any officer found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.”

Mr. Mahama, who reported the alleged assault by the Black Maria Unit, has called for justice. He expressed confidence in the police leadership, particularly citing the prompt response and keen interest shown by the IGP as indicators that justice will be served. The artist made a voluntary visit to the National Police Headquarters in Accra, accompanied by family members, to discuss the incident, which is understood to have occurred approximately a week prior in Tamale.

When questioned about seeking compensation, Mr. Mahama indicated that his primary focus was on achieving justice. He believes that a just resolution will not only bring him personal closure but also bolster public confidence in the justice system and reinforce Ghana’s standing as a secure nation. However, he reserved the right to pursue legal avenues should the investigation reveal clear liability on the part of the police.

Regarding his physical condition, Mr. Mahama disclosed that he sustained injuries to his sides and suffered broken teeth during the alleged altercation. He plans to utilize his time in Accra to seek comprehensive medical attention. He highlighted the lack of advanced diagnostic facilities, such as MRI scanners, in Tamale as a reason for seeking further evaluation and treatment, including dental reconstruction, in the capital.

The artist emphasized that he holds no generalized animosity towards the Ghana Police Service, acknowledging their past support on various occasions. However, he stressed the imperative of addressing this specific incident to ensure accountability. He commended the police for extending an invitation to Accra, interpreting it as a positive sign of their genuine commitment to resolving the matter.

Providing context for the incident, Mr. Mahama explained that the situation escalated from an altercation involving his uncle and police officers. He was present in the same vehicle at the time and began filming the interaction, which he stated led to a physical scuffle.
