Brook Hailu: Election Momentum Builds, Progressing Well

The political landscape of Ethiopia is buzzing with activity as the nation gears up for its 7th General Election. Campaigning efforts are intensifying across the country, with political parties meticulously refining their policy platforms and engaging with the electorate. Simultaneously, citizens have begun the crucial process of voter registration, marking a significant step towards democratic participation.

Professor Brook Hailu, a respected scholar, diplomat, and media analyst, observed in an exclusive interview that the electoral process is largely unfolding in a fair and equitable manner. He believes this approach has the potential to significantly strengthen Ethiopia’s democratic political culture.

Ethiopia has demonstrated notable progress in its commitment to conducting regular nationwide elections. Over the years, the nation has cultivated two core competencies: the institutional discipline to hold elections every five years without fail, and the operational capability to manage these large-scale undertakings effectively.

“Based on my observations of communications from the Electoral Board, as well as from other relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations, I am optimistic that this election is progressing favorably,” Professor Brook stated.

Regarding the crucial aspect of fairness, Professor Brook highlighted the observed inclusive participation and the provision of equal media access for all political contenders. The upcoming election features a robust field of candidates, with over 60 political parties presenting their representatives at federal, regional, zonal, and city levels.

Furthermore, nationwide televised debates have been instrumental in providing a platform for all parties, including smaller ones, to articulate their agendas and address pressing questions from the public. This initiative ensures that a diverse range of voices and policy proposals are brought to the forefront of the electoral discourse.

The effectiveness of the Electoral Board and the adequacy of its staffing are also paramount in guaranteeing credible and transparent voting procedures across Ethiopia’s vast and diverse population. Professor Brook emphasized that these elements are critical to the integrity of the electoral process.

Reflecting on Ethiopia’s democratic journey, Professor Brook characterized democracy as a long-term endeavor that evolves and strengthens through successive elections that are progressively improved.

“Democracy is not established overnight,” he commented. “We are still a young democracy. However, with each election, we gain valuable experience and learn crucial lessons.”

Professor Brook also underscored the vital role of political parties in actively campaigning and leveraging all available media channels to present clear and compelling programs to voters. He urged parties to engage proactively and transparently with the electorate.

In parallel, he stressed the responsibility of citizens to exercise their fundamental right to vote, cautioning against apathy. “If people choose to stay home, they essentially forfeit their rights,” he warned. Professor Brook strongly encouraged widespread voter turnout and active civic engagement, deeming them indispensable pillars of a healthy democracy.

The ongoing voter registration process is a testament to the growing awareness and commitment among Ethiopians to participate in shaping their nation’s future. As the election day draws closer, the focus will shift towards ensuring that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to cast their ballots and contribute to the democratic mandate. The success of this election will not only be measured by the fairness of the process but also by the level of public trust and engagement it fosters, paving the way for continued democratic development in Ethiopia.
