The All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to host its national convention in Abuja, a pivotal event expected to draw a significant contingent of party faithful. With the convention scheduled to unfold from Friday to Saturday, no fewer than 8,453 delegates representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are anticipated to converge in the nation’s capital.
This critical gathering, themed “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” aims to chart the party’s future course, elect new leadership, and reaffirm its commitment to national development objectives.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, elaborated on the convention’s significance during a recent media briefing. He highlighted that the event serves as a crucial platform for delegates to engage in robust policy discussions, culminating in the election of new party executives. This process is vital for consolidating the party’s programs and preparing for the ensuing political cycle.
“The convention will bring together delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for policy engagement, leadership elections and a transition to a new set of party executives,” Malagi stated. “We are expecting a total of 8,453 delegates from across the country to converge on Abuja for this important exercise.”
The Minister also emphasized that the convention would serve to underscore the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, reiterating that the “Renewed Hope Agenda” remains the cornerstone of the party’s policy direction and its contribution to national progress. Preparations for a seamless, transparent, and credible convention at the Eagle Square in Abuja are reportedly complete, with various committees finalizing operational frameworks for effective coordination.
“The forthcoming national convention marks another milestone in our journey, reflecting both continuity in our values and renewal of leadership,” Malagi added. “It is also an opportunity to strengthen alignment between the party and government in delivering on national priorities.”
Aminu Masari, former Governor of Katsina State and Chairman of the National Convention Central Coordinating Committee, expressed confidence in the extensive preparations undertaken by the party. He revealed that the committee initially established 25 sub-committees to meticulously plan and execute the convention, ensuring all aspects are addressed.
“We assure Nigerians that the APC is fully prepared for the 2026 convention, which begins on Friday,” Masari affirmed.
Addressing potential concerns regarding legal challenges stemming from zoning arrangements, Masari stated that the party is unaware of any court actions that could impede the convention. He reiterated the APC’s commitment to its established zoning structure, which operates in accordance with the federal character principle to promote fairness and inclusivity in party administration.
“APC is a responsible political party. In line with the federal character principle, party offices are zoned across regions. Anyone seeking to contest must do so in accordance with the zoning arrangement,” Masari explained. He further confirmed that the party had not received any legal notices pertaining to disputes connected with the convention. “We are not aware that anybody has gone to court. We have not been served any notice. If we are served, we will respond appropriately.”
Despite assurances from party leadership, some members have voiced concerns over alleged irregularities in the zoning process. This has led to legal action from at least one aggrieved aspirant. Fubara Dagogo has reportedly filed a case at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging his exclusion from the South-South Zonal Congress held on March 25, 2026, in Asaba. Dagogo claims he met all nomination requirements, including the payment of a N5.1 million nomination fee.
Another party member, Paul Yovwe Oyiborume, has also voiced grievances regarding the zoning process, though he has not yet initiated legal proceedings.
The APC National Convention is a constitutionally mandated event where delegates have the crucial responsibility of electing members to the National Working Committee (NWC). It is also the primary forum for making significant decisions concerning the party’s administration, policy direction, and overall strategy.
The proceedings of the convention are governed by the provisions outlined in the party’s constitution, which includes specific zoning arrangements. These arrangements are designed to ensure a balanced and equitable distribution of party offices across the various geopolitical zones of the country.
The 2026 convention is anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping the APC’s internal structure and strategic outlook as it prepares for future electoral contests. Furthermore, it is expected to reinforce the party’s policy framework, which is firmly anchored on the “Renewed Hope Agenda” championed by the current administration. The convention signifies a moment of introspection and forward planning, crucial for maintaining the party’s relevance and effectiveness in governance.
