New Port Adelaide Coach Acknowledges Mistakes in Poor Opening Round Performance
Port Adelaide’s new coach, Josh Carr, has taken responsibility for his role in the team’s disappointing performance during the first round of the season against the Kangaroos. The Power suffered a heavy defeat, losing by 46 points at Marvel Stadium. After reflecting on the game and his own contributions, Carr admitted that he may have played a part in leading the team down the wrong path.
“I spoke about it,” Carr told the media on Thursday. “And it started from me. It started from what I felt; in some ways, I may have led the players down that path.”
Carr emphasized the importance of understanding both the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. However, in hindsight, he acknowledged that he might have made some errors in how he communicated expectations to the players regarding North Melbourne.
“I look at myself and go, ‘I probably got a couple things wrong in the way I spoke to the players about North Melbourne and about what to expect’,” he said. “I just thought I could have been better.”
This admission follows comments from Port player Jase Burgoyne, who suggested that the team underestimated the Kangaroos. Burgoyne urged the team to show more respect to all opponents, regardless of their perceived strength.
“Just pay a bit more respect to the teams that you probably don’t think you’re likely to lose to. We just need to do a bit better at respecting any team,” Burgoyne said. “Going into the game, we showed them a little bit of respect, but we probably didn’t think they were going to come out and play how they did.”
Carr referenced Burgoyne’s comments during his press conference, acknowledging that underestimating opponents is not unique to Port. He described it as a sign of an immature team.
“The best teams in the competition, they play the same way every week. They have got a standard that they set, and they play to that standard, and that’s what we’re chasing,” Carr said. “We’re chasing consistency, week-in, week-out, and right through the game. And I feel like obviously we didn’t do that in this game. But it’s a great lesson to come out of it.”
Comments on Zak Butters and Free Agency
Carr also addressed recent comments from Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge regarding Port star Zak Butters, who is currently the most sought-after free agent in the league. Beveridge stated that every club interested in Butters had either spoken to him or connected with him personally during the off-season.
“I’m sure there are a lot of teams that would like to get their hands on him,” Carr said. “He’s ours right now, and we’re doing everything we can to keep Zak, and more importantly, I know how invested he is in our football club.”
Carr expressed no surprise at Beveridge’s comments, noting that it’s natural for clubs to seek out top talent. He emphasized that Butters remains committed to Port Adelaide and that the team is focused on retaining his services.
“Luke Beveridge wants a really good player to come to his football club, and there’s not a team in Australia that wouldn’t have Zak,” Carr said. “He’s out of contract at the end of the year, and I’m sure there are a lot of teams that would like to get their hands on him.”
