A bold look at parenting culture and ‘mummy politics’

A Deep Dive into “The Mother of All Calamities”

Lisa Moule’s The Mother of All Calamities is a compelling exploration of the intricate dynamics that shape the lives of mothers, teachers, and caregivers in a modern Australian setting. Published by Allen & Unwin for $34.99, this novel delves into the emotional and psychological challenges faced by women navigating the complexities of parenthood and professional life.

The Characters and Their Struggles

At the heart of the story are four hyper-competent women whose lives intersect in the school playground, a space often referred to as “mummy politics.” These women represent different facets of motherhood, each grappling with their own unique set of challenges.

Jenny, the longstanding PA president, is a model of emotional regulation. Organized and methodical, she is deeply committed to her role as a mother. Her dedication is evident in the early mornings spent baking cupcakes to ensure her son, Val, has a friend at school. However, Val’s behavioral issues and frequent outbursts create a constant source of stress for Jenny. She goes to great lengths to protect her son from social rejection, even if it means compromising her ethical standards.

Enter Estelle, an old acquaintance who returns to the neighborhood with her daughter Harmony. Harmony, described as having “unfiltered arrogance” and a “mendacious pout,” becomes Val’s new playmate. While this seems like a relief for Jenny, it soon becomes clear that Harmony is manipulative and aggressive. Estelle, too, struggles with her feelings towards her daughter, often waking up feeling numb due to an intense hatred.

For their teacher, Miss Petty, the challenges are more bureaucratic. The arrival of a new male recruit, who appears underqualified, shakes her confidence in her role as an educator. She feels undervalued and unappreciated, especially when parents demand special attention for their children. This situation highlights a broader issue: the undervaluation of female roles in society, particularly in education and caregiving.

The Broader Social Commentary

Moule’s novel is not just about individual struggles but also a critique of societal structures. The book emphasizes how essential services such as teaching, nursing, and caregiving are predominantly carried out by women, often without recognition or proper compensation. These roles require a unique set of skills—empathy, patience, and resilience—that are frequently overlooked.

One of the characters reflects on the idea that women are “wired to feel for others while keeping a numb space for ourselves.” This observation raises questions about the origins of such behavior. Is it a result of societal expectations, or is it a natural inclination? The novel suggests that these traits are deeply rooted in patriarchal structures, which have long dictated the roles and responsibilities of women.

Viv’s Journey

The fourth character, Viv, adds another layer to the narrative. After returning to paid employment, she takes a desk job at the police station to confront her past. Her goal is to help vulnerable young women, much like she once was. However, the job brings back painful memories and risks triggering old nightmares. Additionally, Viv faces exclusion from social gatherings with other mothers, highlighting the challenges of re-entering the workforce after taking time off for family.

Relationships and Resilience

All the women in the story are in subpar relationships with subpar men, further reinforcing the novel’s central theme: women’s ability to navigate and overcome adversity. Despite the challenges they face, these women demonstrate remarkable resilience and strength. They excel at forming social connections, which, according to the novel, is one of the most important skills in life.

Conclusion

The Mother of All Calamities offers a nuanced portrayal of the complexities of motherhood, teaching, and caregiving. Through its richly drawn characters and insightful commentary, the novel invites readers to reflect on the roles and responsibilities of women in society. It is a thought-provoking read that resonates with anyone interested in understanding the hidden struggles of those who quietly shape our world.
